Hey Ron, While those BCA checkers are amazing reminders for your transceiver, people should think of them as the LAST safety checkpoint prior to heading up the trail. A properly done self group check should become part of every groups morning procedures.

Totally correct, and we typically do a beacon check at the vehicles. One day I did the beacon check I much have turned my unit from search to off, this was caught by the last checkpoint at the shack which was awesome. My point is that all it takes just a simple mistake in the parking lot can also change the outcome to a day.

Not a bad idea to check them again at lunch.

Those guys hate sledders and try to close down ridding areas. Why would you want to send your hard earned money to them only for them to use it against you?

I have a DSP sport and it has never shifted modes on me and this is with it worn in my vest pocket and not in the holster. I did notice it was getting easier to change between modes and have since retired it for a new updated unit.

I have seen more than a few cracked case by guys going over the bars that wore their beacon up high on their chest.

Me too. I also damaged an antenna on an old BCA 2 with a bar hit even with it in the holster back when I wore a pack. All this means is I range check my transceiver regularly. My style of vest has buckles that can ice up and it takes too long to get open and transceiver out when worn underneath in that situation even though it only happens 2 or 3 times a year.

For those who have the pieps, does yours lock into search as shown in the video? My has never locked into search mode which is very unsettling as during a search it could easily be switch and you lose your flags and progress. I have a video of mine but not sure how to post it

Got it. Notice how it does not click. I take my finger off the button and then am able to push it back into send mode

It is not supposed to lock in the search position. In case of a emergency you need to be able to quickly switch it back to send.

Exactly, if you don't know how your beacon functions you are not doing yourself any favors. RTFM

I would prefer this. It’s more likely I’ll bump it during a search, than have a search with a second avalanche. But it does happen.

Yours locks in the search mode???
It must have a auto revert to send after it stops moving or something. The BCA tracker 1 had that function but it had to be activated, I cannot recall if the tracker 2 had it or not.

Mammut Barryvox Element locks in search mode. No movement after 8 minutes I think it is....back to send mode automatically.

I also sent in an email about the upgrade. Will likely be taking advantage of their upgrade offer, even though mine seems to be functioning correctly I wouldn't chance it. Also a good option to upgrade a few years in technology.
