Any guys on here taking paternity leave? Problem is we own a business my wife works at and manages full time while I work for a company full time. The company needs her, so shes going to take some time off but in the fall she will need to go back and i may take leave. Only thing is $2000 a month????. My accountant asked if my company does top ups but its a engineering/inspection firm with all men except for the secretaries ....Not one maternity or paternity leave yet!

When my first one was born, I got the weekend off ( still haven't lived THAT one down) :)
We had one of the drivers here take time off when his wife had her baby, but he probably just used his holidays, I'm thinking.
SO, I'm not really adding anything pertinent to your conversation, but I've typed too much to back space now

I took 4 months off with my oldest and 3 with my youngest... It's paid by EI so yes the maximums apply. Hard to find a company that will top up their only obligation is to hold your spot.

I took 6 months parental leave when we had our second child. It was great although it went too fast. The company I work for topped your EI up so you got 80% of your salary so that was good. Couldn't have done in on EI alone.

I did it, got top up to 93%. Took four months, and it was awesome. Only thing you have to watch is that EI doesn't tax you near enough on the benefit, so you can get screwed later if your not mindful of it.

really depends on your job then, if your are easily replaceable then i guess so, I guess ill have to see how replaceable i am and what i know versus a new guy regardless if he has more experience than me has to learn everything ive learned company wise. My boss only hires good fits and mainly everyone right out of school and our engineers have to go threw a year of field work prior to any engineering sooooooooo the question still is how replaceable am i to him? Is it worth it to lose me over a couple thousand dollars in the long run.

One thing I noticed is that there is a stigma that goes with guys taking pat leave. Especially amongst the older crowd. No one will say it to you, buts it definitely present.

Yah everyone in the office here is 20s - low 30s other than the owners and the one questioned me knowing i own a company and my wife runs it. kind of a weird situation working for some one when you own a company.... Having a boss yet being a boss at the same time? It's weird.
