So, waiting for a parcel coming to the Montana Outlet, we decided we had better check our passports for the expiry date. Sure enough, they are expired but less than the year they allow.

If we would have just gone down for the 30 minute excursion, what would have happened? Do the US Boarder Security escort you back to the CBS personnel? Do they just tell you to turn around and leave? What happens at the CBS check point when you arrive with an expired passport?

Interesting scenarios can be thought about but who has some real world experience with this?

Best thing to do is give them a call. Might save you a trip.
But you do have up to one year passed expiry to get your new ones without the "big hassle" of redoing them from scratch.

Forms are all filled out and we will be going to Canada Service Centre in Lethbridge on Monday. Just thought I would generate some discussion and see what peeps experiences have been. Prior to 911, a person may have been able to zip down with no problems. I don't think so this day and age.

I've been told you can just use your drivers license. Haven't tried it personally.

We crossed into the States on the way to Sturges last year and my nephew forgot his passport. He was held up at the boarder for 20 min while they did a check on him and with a drivers license they allowed him to cross. I was surprised. They told him the guard have the latitude to pass or not. If he'd have had any marks on his record he would have been turned away.

I have heard there is a bit of leeway if you are crossing by ground. Worth a call Doug? You are so squeaky clean they will prolly give you the key to Montana anyways. Lol. Or some lemon garlic shrimp may be enough to sway them. Not like there is fine dining for those border guards in Coutts anyways? Lol.

I went to vegas in fall and ours was expiring in 3 months and we got held up for a while because they said it has to be vaild for 6 months prior to going. They only let us going because we already had returned tickets booked

if you are going by ground they do have some flexibility but via air I was told no way on an expired one. I was heading to S.America about 2 years ago and had 5 months left before it expired. Got to the airport and they did give me a fair bit of flack and could have turned me back but fortunately they could see I was a frequent flyer and let me go. I was very surprised as I was going via Dallas. I now have the 10 year passport so I don't have the hassle.

Doug if your parcel is at At the Border Storage on Oak ST in Sweet Grass MT. I am planning on pick up there in about two weeks. You can renew your passport in as little as 24 hours now at a Canada Service location. Just a matter of money.

You can try to negotiate with a border guard who may, or may not be a reasonable person and allow a drivers license as ID but why bother? Coming back in to Canada can be more difficult than going to the US depending on who you get for a screening officer and what kind of day they are having.

That package in Montana isn't full of green is it? (Green of course meaning Arctic Cat parts)

We were wondering about the CBS side. They can be dicks if they are on a power trip but to be honest every trip through the CBS has never been a problem except sometimes in the early days of getting stuff down there. Actually, we scooped up some Oakley Air Frames (they are not green ones) for $105 on good ol' Steep and Cheap. Those googles are $250+ in Canada. Even with the exchange, it was a sweet deal.

We booked a trip to Antigua and 2 weeks before we left we checked our passports. Sure enough mine had expired. Got it back the day before we left. Just a little stressful in the house for a few days. Thanks for the thread cause mine is about to expire again.
