Here's the deal, i'm finishing the inside of my garage and i thought while i'm add it i should raise the door another foot to make it easier to back the boat in, it's currently a 16 x 7'. I called around and pretty much everyone is saying it's better off to start from scratch than add in a custom panel. I was even told that my door opener won't even work now as it's set for a 7 foot door. I was quoted around $1600 for steel craft door 16 x 8 installed with an opener, which i thought was outrageous for an extra foot. I only built the house 4 years ago so the door is in good shape but you think i would have any luck selling my used door on Kijiji to help offset the difference. What's it worth? It's a Wayne Dalton 16 x 7. Any other ideas.

The 16x7's usually have only 4 x 21" sections.....to go to an 8' door you would likely only re-use the top and the bottom panels and install 3x18" sections. You need longer side rails and top rails as well. Depending on the opener, you can get extensions or buy a longer boom and chain. Some openers even came this way....boom for a 7 footer....If you had an 8' door you popped an extension on and there was a chunk of chain with a master link to add in. Make sure you have MINIMUM 12" of headroom above the door....preferably 13 or 14" so there's room for the opener against the ceiling. (I was a door installer many moons ago...and I still play when I can, installed my own and several buddies' doors over the years)

This is who i got the rough quote from and yes chance are he will be getting my buisness very helpfull and local...to bad he drives a Ford tho.

DaveB, i measured up the door and panels for "Well Hung" and your correct they are 21" panels. Looking at the opener how do i know if it will work with an 8 foot door, i really don't want to replace it as it's only as old as the house (4yrs). Sooooo:rolleyes:what do you charge for a cash install:d

I used an opener for a 7' high door on my buddies 8' door when he bought the wrong one and was cheap/lazy to go back and get the right one. With the traveler (the part that moves on the rail) set so that when the door is all the way down it is right at the front of the rail....then set the limits so it pulls right back to the stopper nut in the rail at the top by the motor....the door hangs in the opening about 2 inches.

Just open your door now and observe how much more travel you COULD get on the up end....then close it and observe how much more travel you could get on the down end....add that to 7 feet.

I can tell you that if its a Chamberlain or Sears opener there is probably an extension kit available. There's probably lots of others, but I've been out of the loop for a while! LOL.

I'd love to come and do it....but I'm in Red Deer eh.....

What is your ceiling height in the garage, as dave stated u need 13 -14 inches of clearance. for a 8 ft door i think u need at least 9 ft 4 inch ceiling or u will need those cheater rails I had to use them on my door. I had bought 2 used doors on buysell.com about 6 years ago they wer in good shape for $300.00

I was checking around on Kijiji and FINALLY after typing in the correct search word came across a used 8 foot door in Spruce Grove, i've emailed the seller but he hasn't got back to me yet.

Deasoninc, if your interested in mine let me know, i will let it go cheap, cheap as i don't want it laying around my yard. I'm going to try and re-use the opener after reading DaveB suggestions. Send me a PM.

Blastoff, i think i have room...the new rough opening would be 96" and i have 14" above that to the ceiling so around 110" from concrete to ceiling.

Thanks for all suggestions.

DaveB, i checked the opener over the week-end and it's a Wayne Dalton/ Quantom series. I poked around and i think i see where you can add the extension with the extra link. Still no reply from the guy on Kijiji with the used door.

Deasonic, i got your PM, i'll try to give you a call today sometime.

anyword on the door? just wondering.

Sorry dude, i thought i read somewhere that you were in Mexico. The guy on Kijiji called back and apparently he measured wrong :confused:it was only a 7 footer he had for sale. If you're not in a rush i'll probably wait til spring now but yes i will be selling.

I just installed a new 16x8 in my garage, went thru totem, 1200.00 was the cheapest price anywhere.

What kind of shape is your old 7ft door in? Our door came down on the minivan a few years ago, and the bottom panel is a little kinked...... Still works good though, just isn't high on priority list. How much and what kind of shape(any pics?)?
