Yea that pisses me off too. You have to know how to actually write. And you can't do math on a computer. It's not going to be long and all these kids will be signing their names as X because they can't handwrite. Pathetic.

I get the advancement in technology. But writing a short story or putting a paragraph together. On paper. Remember writing until your hand hurt.

I'm 30 and still use checks regularly. Probably 95% of my income to my company is still checks. They are still incredibly common.

Agreed, if I start a business I'm sure it'll be mandatory, but for my personal use I don't need it. For the once and a while I need to make a large payment I just get a bank draft, as most places want a certified cheque anyway.

I’ll say it again, the catholic school system is pretty good, they don’t preach all the pc B.S. as much as the public system, and our school has the highest grades in town.

Are there still things they teach that I disagree with, you bet! But that’s where parenting comes in.

I feel like it’s counter productive when I have to explain to my children that what there being taught at school isn’t always right, meaningful or real life. Times have changed I get it. It wasn’t until grade 11 that I had a kid in class that had an allergy. Now a peanut butter sammich is the same a sexual predator. Can’t be within 300 yds of a school. My kids were in the catholic school board. I’m trying not to place all the blame here on teachers or curriculums as each school is different.

**** if I have to write out even 5-6 checks my hand hurts cause i'm not use to writing anymore. They need to learn to write by hand when young, as they are older computers are fine as it use to be.

I think the curriculum is the problem, an that the teachers don’t separate what they feel or believe from what they’re supposed to teach.

Last year one of my kids teachers let the kids know his feeling about the various political party’s, that was a moment I took to let my kids know what I think and how I feel.

All the kids did a mock election in AB and the results mirrored the actual election results. I’m thinking I’m not the only parent to offer an alternative opinion on provincial politics.

Yea not too many places take a check unless you have account. Fun fact land titles still takes checks, from anyone surprisingly. Most of my stuff is small contractors though where checks are still king. E-transfers slowing creeping up but $3k limits make them tough.

I think one of the issues is life skills. Teachers tend to push an agenda ...but based on what. I would bet that a very high percentage of them have never actually left the school system. They went to school as kids, graduated, of to university/college for a degree in teaching and back into school as a teacher. Pretty hard for them to think outside the box when they have never been out of the box themselves. While I also think they have a pretty crappy job too, I sure wouldn't want to look after a bunch of hooligans parenting doesn't stop just because kids are at school. Especially the political crap. Kind of amazed what the kids come home with in their heads. And unless you take the time to ask them and give them a different perspective, that is what they will believe is right. Best we can do is teach our kids to question every thing and that what they learn in school isn't the be all end all to life. As someone stated earlier, kids will learn alot from untangling a ratnest in a real. Just my 02

The funny part about cheque’s now is most are being typed and printed haha. The only writing is your signature.

What would Ferniesnow say?

Hahaha...............I just about spit out my coffee laughing at that Joel!! Home schooling seems to be working in a lot of cases and I can see where if one parent isn't working it would be a great investment in a child's future.

There have been many times that my wife and I have said, "sure glad we are not raising our children in this time." I decided to retire because of the socialistic and protectionism aspects of the parents toward their children. I loved the kids and worked well with them and taught all grades from K-12. Having a technical/trade background before going to university for my degree helped immensely as I had a lot of real life experience and could relate to aspects that students needed besides the curriculum. Even back in the day, there were a lot of real life talks and discussions that would happen in small groups and the students would actively participate without being torn or embarrassed to speak out. Someone above talked about "the agenda" and from my point of view, it appears to be so evident today that the real things that students need to learn about are being missed. As far as the sexual aspect of life and the environmental aspect, is there a need to preach that in the schools? I don't think so as it is too politicized. IMHO, it is more important to teach concepts that students will need when they graduate; every day concepts like banking, loans, credit, basic math, writing, reading, history, etc..

I really feel for the problems a lot of parents must be experiencing these days due to the "socialistic aspect" of today. If you spank your child (there are a lot of people who disagree with this concept but it is the next step that irks me) and your child happens to mention it at school, then there is a phone call from some do-gooder welfare worker who by legislation is entitled to come and do an investigation into your parenting techniques. Or you discipline your child in the store and the same thing happens.

I know that some won't agree and some of you aren't old enough but I seem to be saying the best years of my life were the '80's and '90's. We will never go back in time and the future with regards to social aspects is very scary for this ol' fart. Let it snow so I can get out in the bush and just worry about trees to go around and hills to climb!!

This 100%. I have a uni degree that I pursued in an employable field but I was around a lot of people that took arts (and occasionally science) programs and then found out by 3rd or 4th year that they didn't offer a career path without at least a Masters and sometimes a Doctorate and so did the 1 year teaching certificate instead. There were a lot of people that hadn't intended to become teachers that wound up in that profession. I'm not saying it's an easy job especially as so many little Johnnys and Sallies can do no wrong in their parents eyes these days but a lot of teachers have never been outside the isolated world of academia.
