Seen these at Ritchie's today. The white one has X3 track in perfect shape, zbros front end, and all 4 shocks are Exit shocks. Never been cleaned a single day in its life. The red one is bone stock and pretty clean.

I prefer low mileage in good shape. You can have the best upkeep on a higher mileage sled but it's a matter of time until something goes wrong over years of vibration/corrosion.
September is a great time to buy, make a list of sleds you're interested in and make them offers. It's a buyers market, you're in a great position.

You pull wrenches for a living and you need a test drive ? Lol
If a person can't tell by looking at overall condition and how it runs don't think a test drive will help? IMO

I agree, I've never test rode any of my last 5 sleds, IMO it's very easy to tell a shape of a sled without riding.

Same here . Over all condition and knowing what to look for is key.
If you don't get someone to come with you that does know.

Ok here's one, older doo xp

Starts and runs cold good, reverse works right away

Get it hot, not from just idling

Now reverse fails, hint of low hot compression

Just one reason I would like to test ride it

Cold & hot compression test can't tell you low compression? Anything over 3000km's on an 800r scream potential in for needing top end if they don't have receipts for rebuild. I've bought 2 used 2004 800HO's and two used 08 800r's using this same strategy and all were good.

Test riding is always the best for sure, but good inspection can reduce your risks significantly

Oh I agree, comp test is a good idea, but still not 100 fool proof as can have pistons scored ect But have compression

I will still hold out for a test ride, or take my chances

But that's my own opinion

Getting a Demo model from a dealership is actually a phenomenal value providing you know who it was demo'd with and such. Mine go for far less than MSRP, with full warranty completely loved and looked after. You can get a good deal, on a Newish sled (usually 1 year old) and warranty. Polaris gives you the full warranty I believe but I believe arctic cat starts the warranty when the demo lands at the dealership. Don't quote me on that, but it is how it used to be. Sometimes extras are included in the price like bumpers, bags and boards.
My Axyl Roze is going through Wild Country Powersports. 2016 155 800 Polaris Axys

Different taking one for a quick feild, trail burn

Compared to a boosted sled doing a climb

Back in Red Deer, some years it doesn't even get snow. I'm not letting some random grass drag my sled either.lol

If there is snow in the field, and the buyer has cash in hand, and doesn't look too sketchy, I'd probably say yes though.

I have not read this thread from the beginning but my advice is to figure out how much a person is gonna ride who you are going to ride with. I from the if you do not pay it now your gonna pay it latter type of view. If you are not mechanically inclined and on a budget get a non current but do your research or you will get screwed on what to buy and what price to pay

Good point about paying now or later! I usually ride on saturdays. And not everyone at that :( Considering I'm new to mountain riding, I think shermanator/billdozer crew would be my kind of riding. Based on what I have read in various (humorous) threads.
Currently trying to decide whether to bite the bullet and buy newer/low mileage which would delay eventual repair costs and have higher resale value compared to older models. In a bit of a pickle as the British would say...

those fellows have the luxury of picking there days and conditions they ride. With yourself only riding every second saterday you may hit bad snow conditions and rough trails. Nothing wrong with hooking up with fellows with there experience though.
