Have been window shopping on kijiji and castanet lately. Some guys are selling 2015's with somewhat high miles and new crate engine for less than 2014's with average milage. And then there is the odd repo place selling a 2015 for less then a 2014. If you were looking to buy a used sled, which route would you choose?

Depends what brand your looking for

That would be the big question. Different years of different brands vary so much.

Personally if i am looking at something used i would have a look at the overall condition of the sled along with the miles. A high miler that has been stored in a garage and carted around in an enclosed trailer or under a cover would be higher on my list than something newer, with low miles that someone throws on an open trailer with no cover. Generally i believe that the cleanliness of the sled normally says something about the maintenance as well.

Just my $.02

Yes, I bought a used 08 rzr from a dead old guys wife, had 9400 miles on it

But looking at it, even looking deep you would never know

Compared to something with 1000 miles that I could tell was road hard ect from looking deep, and 4000 more price difference

Thats like my old sled, some of my friends think I should sell it to them for nothing because I rode it lots.

But thing is, the sled has been totally rebuilt with new parts. Not just trying to sell someone my old warn out sled here.

I'd look at the overall condition of the sled, over the milage.

It is a dilemma. I am on the other side of the fence. Selling a high mileage 2015 and competing in this market. Lots of dealer left overs (new and going back to 2014-15-16 were sold in the late winter) with good warranty. Sure put a different twist on the market.

The Doo 2014-15's generally have warranty remaining but maybe only for a short while. Is it long enough to find out if there is a need for a new motor? A seller has to be realistic. There are many sleds for sale out there that are way over priced for the market (not overpriced in the seller's eye as they think they have the best sled ever with all the accessories!). Tough call.

It really comes down to knowing the sled and the rider for those good deals. The Doo's have been going strong for the high mileage and some have reached 10,000K without a hick-up.

The high mileage sled should be discounted accordingly in this market just to catch the eye of the buyer and then the research begins.

My 2015 T3 174 ES has 4500 km on it with one full year and a bit remaining on warranty. In my eyes, it is worth a lot more than I will get for it. But I want it sold (I don't need it sold) so I have room in the shop for the 2 new ones that are coming. Priced to sell in and around $10,000.

Still have to get it out there in "used sled world" and starting September 1 was my goal to get it all cleaned up and shiny for the next owner.

Depends on what your plan is. If youre planning on keeping it a while I would go with the high miler with the new engine. Thing is.....as youve seen.....resale sucks on high mile sleds so its gonna be hard to sell after you put even more miles on it. People just see the higher miles and it scares them off. If you plan on selling it in the next couple of years stick to something with lower miles.

But say my sled for example, got motor done at 8000 km Before warranty is off in November

Compared to a 14 with 3000 miles and warranty is up in November and no work done

I'd still buy the higher km one with new motor

Being a mechanic, higher km vehicles don't scare me one bit if its been looked after and body ect is good ( not a body man at all lmao)

Vehicles, quads ect with super low km are sometimes worse as seals dry up, gas gets old ect from sitting

The only problem with the higher mileage sleds is generaly the chassis starts to degrade after 10000km. I have 2 xps with 10000km + and my xm is getting close to that also. Running boards cracking in the foot wells rear hangers failing a arm bushings loose. rivets losening front coolers falling off etc. have to really look at them when buying. But like tex says im not afraid to buy high mileage for less and fix a few things.

There are lots of guys asking top dollar for used sleds. It doesn't mean they are "selling" them.

I have seen 2009/2010 XP's listed for $6500. I can't get that for our 2012 with an almost new motor that's still in break in mode.

Then you see guys trying to sell a year old sled for more than what I would pay for a new one likely because they owe more on it that it's worth. If you want to flip sleds every year don't finance them. Lol.

If I was buying used for myself I would get the lowest mileage sled I could find. As mentioned the chassis takes a beating as well. There are guys like likduke who rebuild stuff and have lots of upgrades but most don't.

I am hoping to get the girlfriend off her XP this year and onto a good used XM. For her a higher mileage sled won't be a problem because she isn't running it wot for a good portion of the day.

I own a Polaris and I wouldn't touch a used one unless I know where it came from. Lol. Cat motors have typically been great high mileage runners.

I think my price is pretty reasonable for a 2015 personally. About 50% of what I payed new. A buddy of mine wants to pay me 4g and I'm like LOL

I'm looking at cats. 2013 and up. Saw a 2015 with new engine with 5000 kms for less then a 2014 with +/- 2000 kms.

If you want deals on sleds ? Buy them in the spring or summer.
Goes for most toys , as buy in off season.
Selling ? Different story . Lol

Only thing is with sleds, buying off season can't test drive it, so taking a chance

low mileage and babied. high km means it's got wear on a lot more than a motor. The chassis on these things are aluminum and don't go forever. If you hunt around you can usually find some poor schmuck that bought it brand new the year before and rode it twice and is now selling it because he never used it.

You pull wrenches for a living and you need a test drive ? Lol
If a person can't tell by looking at overall condition and how it runs don't think a test drive will help? IMO
Yep, looking can't tell clutchs bad, looking can't tell vibrations, engine issues ect
