2 things in the past 50 years have spurred a lot technological advances, war and space exploration. a lot of the technology we take for granted now comes from those two things. even some advances in medical technology comes from them as well.
just something to think about.

When you are in debt so far there is no chance in your lifetime or your kids lifetime of getting out of it, spending money on non essential things are not a good idea.

Honestly though, it's GOVERNTMENT NONE I don't care who has any idea how to manage money. Alberta right now is a right example, boom for a good couple years, one slow year and the gov't is so broke it's not even funny. Two years ago they had more money then they knew what to do with. Not like it's the first time it's happened and won't be the last. The next couple years will be boom, then the gov't will be broke as a joke again....IDIOTS.

If all of us managed our money like the gov't no one would ever own anything and any slow time everyone would be bankrupt.....

i know, country debt is a stupid thing, why should a country go into debt at all? we all have to live within our own means

i have heard of government projects go millions and billions over budget, and no one gets fired. government needs to be run like a democracy/private enterprise hybrid. if you go over budget you will be held accountable (fired)

as for alberta there is hope, with the wild rose alliance. maybe someone new can shake things up(that isnt liberal or ndp). we are still in a good spot, no debt compared to other provinces.

country debt, like personal and corporate debt is not necessarily a bad thing. If debt were truly a "stupid thing", imagine all the capital projects that would never go ahead. (oil sands, oil refinement, ring roads, universities etc...

As long as you're smart about taking on debt, you're in a good position.

that is the key, smart debt is debt you can pay off. the federal governments of canada and united states dont seem to want to do that.

maybe 350summitx would like to try again.

I would agree with 350summitx. When necessary, debt is okay when it is thought through (smart).
If ya built a factory and ya end up hitting your budget, if you go over budget or borrow you can get the factory done and get it making money. By leaving it sit not finished until the rest of the funds come in, thats years of profit that are lost. Even if some of that profit is gone to pay interest there is still some kept, people employed, and sales figures rolling.

He never said balls deep America's 12 trillion is smart, cause 12 trillion is a few too many feet below ground.

No, i dont agree with people buying '10 trucks, new holiday trailers, ATV's, etc all with financing. Or with a city borrowing money to build a new arena.

But I do agree with someone having to take a mortgage to buy a house, a city borrowing money to build a overpass to save lives, etc.

You have to look at if paying the extra money, is worth it in order to have it now. AND what you will not be able to have in the future because your paying extra to have something now. Thats the problem with government's, they dont have a bank saying auhhh no, you cant get another loan, pay off this one first.
