New Vehicle - Extended Warranty

Im just in the process of picking up a 2020 Nissan NV 200 SV for my work vehicle. Its only a 29000 vehicle as well, comes with a 3 yr 60000 bumper to bumper, and a 5 year 100000 km warranty. I put on around 60000 km per year. The Nissan extended warranty needs to be paid up front and its 2880 I think that was to 160000 km. They were trying to sell me a SecureDrive Elite plan for 4 years - 200000 km warranty that covers bumper to bumper for 3293 plus GST. which works out to $96 per month for 36 months then you get the last year for free. $500 deductible and it you don't use it at all you get 2K at the expiry. In 4 years on that thing ill have 240000 km which is a fair amount. I don't think I would use this. Thoughts? These aftermarket things scare me as well.

I have always said no to extended warranties, my thoughts was if you put that cash in a pot and do the pay as it breaks you would win. In saying that i just bought a new holiday trailer and bought the extended warranty, it offers if you don’t use it you get most of it back so i guess i am testing the waters. So i will know in a few years if i got screwed.

would like to hear some first hand info myself.

Almost sounds like the extended warranty thats offered on travel trailers. I have never used it on my last trailer and I got my money back. Fine details like you still have to own the unit, and have to file the paperwork before the warranty expires etc.

No issues there tho, that particular company was good to deal with.

I buy extended warranties. Piece of mind is worth somthing. There are so many electronics on vehicles now. One repair or diagnostic could pay for the extra warranty.

We bought a new Fleetwood bumper pull in 2007. Bought the extended warranty. In 2010 the front molded plastic cracked. It is all one piece and covers the entire front of the trailer.
Took it back to Rangleland RV in Calgary thinking extended warranty would cover it, nope. They said to read the fine print, as exterior is considered cosmetic and not covered. So I asked him if I ripped it all off and drove down the deerfoot with insulation flying all over the highway would it still be considered “cosmetic”? All he said was read the fine print and would not cover it.
We got it covered under insurance as it was a pretty big bill to replace.
He later told me in an email after we reported it to the BBB, that it really only covered stove,fridge,furnace and hot water tank.
I’ve never purchased another extended warranty on anything.

Had that on my holiday trailer. Never used warranty and didn't see a dime at the end. Company laughed when I asked for it. When I get a chance I'll look thru the paperwork. Probably still the same scamming bastards.

on new vehicles I never have, but on every sled I bought I did and boy its paid off bigtime everytime.

When I bought my new Tundra last year I was offered the extended warranty but I have 3 years to decide if I want it or not. If I bought a lemon I will be buying the extended warranty

For how cheap that warranty is and the amount of kms you will be driving I think it’s worth it .
I never buy extended warranty as it’s such a rip off IMO for the vehicles i drive and have never needed it .
If the factory warranty isn’t good enough and vehicle is junk I move on and put the extended warranty I would have paid into another unit .
Shop warranty also as huge markups on that end and they can deal .
Internet is a wonderful place for shopping .
Don’t think you have to by from purchase dealer .
Big dealers out east tend to be cheaper . FYI

Wow! Thats a good warranty, hopefully there is no catch.
Usually that does not happen, and is expensive to purchase on a “used” vehicle.

Every vehicle I have ever bought you can purchase extended as long as you purchase before factory bumper to bumper expires .
Maybe Fargo is different as I haven’t ever owned nor will I . lol

I would think that all the major issues will happen when the vehicle is within the 100 Km, and its a van not a snowmobile or RV. And I had the cornerstone warranty on my first trailer and It was noting but a let down for each and every item I had it in for, deny, deny. With the miles im putting on it and the length of time I will have it I will still be paying for a warranty for a vehicle I do not own any more as I would upgrade this every few years. There relatively cheap, I can understand if it was an expensive diesel vehicle. I will decline this warranty today, thank you for your advise.

Haven't bought extended warranty on anything. Personally, I think it is a rip off. Lots of pros and cons and lots of screwed up stories over the years. Sales people, whether vehicles or appliances are the worst scammers around.

Was there a situation where I regretted not having extended warranty? No and I sort of think like Clode in that if you put that same amount of money away you will actually build a fairly big pot of cash that will see you through any major calamity.

they are making money on it, could be as much as 100% markup I've been told. Essentially it's an insurance policy IMO.

Yes, Pricing is usually different and its classified as “used”, so the warranty plan changes, years and km available change as well.
Just went through this with my 2012, when I added more warranty before my original extended warranty expired.

Your right, I dunno what other manufacturers do, but I could not purchase the same warranty I did when the truck was brand new and not driven off the lot.


3500 bucks for a used truck manufacturers warranty that covers alot, was a no brainer for another 5 years 100k coverage.

Aftermarket warranty was 8g for my truck, no thanks.

That extended warranty is a negotiable item. I picked up a 2018 dmax and I got the extended warranty. I chatted with a good friend of mine that’s a ford salesman about extended warranty. He said on a ford similar to what I was buying extended warranty would be $2800 cost. Way way less than the $5200 they were trying to sell it to me at. Buddy told me to offer them $3000 and tell them they can make a little or nothing. They took the $3000.

I used to work at an extended warranty company... Myself only took out extended warranty on a sled. Ever. Put that $3300+ in an account and collect what little interest is paid out now adays, an you'll probably never touch the money for repairs. Just regular maintenance. We do sever companies that have 6 or 7 of these vehicles for maintenance, and they are pretty bullet proof. One has over 500k on it already, and no mechanical failures yet. Oil changes, tune-ups, brakes and tires and i think we did u-joints as well. Still original battery on a 2013

I always tell the salesman "why the hell would I buy your vehicle if extended warranty is so important?"

The fact that the salesman makes very good on warranty commission is more important to him then your piece of mind.

also watch out SOME of the extended warranties cancel out the factory warranty from day 1 as its a 3rd party warranty, meaning the dealer can now say its not there problem if something weird happens because its now covered by someone else other then the manufacture. found this out when i bought my 2019 f350 started asking a few deeper questions about it when they offered it.
