Ok heres the deal. I know a diesel 3500-5500 dually will tow better. It is obvious. The toy hauler Im about to buy is just under 14k dry. Add water, sxs and extras and Im at 16,500ish give or take. The gvw of the toy hauler is 18k. My current 1ton is rated for 14,000. I put some money down at the same place for a 2500hd duramax as well. Problem is the is no consistent ratings for this truck. I have read as well as the salesman that the ratings are between 14 and 18k towing a 5th wheel. Im not sure why the difference but it is for the exact same bed/cab/engine config. So does anyone have this exact same truck (2016 2500hd duramax short box crew cab) that tows a heavy trailer? Hows does it do? The truck will be a daily driver as well and tow my enclosed. I wish I could test drive the truck and trailer together before buying.

I can look at my owners manual. Pretty sure those numbers are correct for towing
To bad you didn't live closer. You could use mine to get a idea. Pretty sure it will pull it with out a problem.
You should've kept your old dodge diesel.

Mine is 13,900 max trailer weight. So 14,000 for a round number
Or 25,100 lbs GCWR

You should be around 18,000# towing capacity with the right gearing on 2500 series. 373gears
Or else trade that Chevy off on a Dodge!

So where do you get the 18,000 from? That is the issue I'm having. Even from gm some sites say 18k some say 14k.

2016 2500hd 4x4 diesel crewcab 6.6box is 13,900lbs gooseneck. You need a one ton, 16,500lbs behind a 3/4 ton is a lot of weight. I pull a gooseneck 20,000lbs behind a gmc 3500hd diesel dually. You know it's there but that dually sure makes it stable.

And the dodge guys, go pop your mirrors out while you drive around the city... Come on. My 2004 dodge diesel is falling apart with 219,000km, dusted engine, front end wobbles, driveshaft bearings all toast, rear end popping, rusted out wheel wells in the rear. We have a 2000 gmc 6 litre gas, 230,000km drives like its brand new still, no issues, just a fuel pump and regular maint, worked just as hard as the dodge.

I have a 2014 dmax 2500, pull a toyhauler(which is still for sale...) that weighs 13000 uvw. Probably 15-16000 lb with all rhe gear in it that i haul. I installed airbags, which is a must have even with a 3500 imo. Ive tried it both ways and feels much more stable and less sway with the bags (i run them around 60-70 psi unloaded before i hook up the trailer)
Pulling with the gm is no problem, im always more concerned on the different brak sizes gmc has. Im not sure if theres the option to get bigger brakes, but thats what i would look at.
Aything can get the trailer moving, its always the slowing/stopping that has me concerned alot.

Good choice. Look at your pin weight of trailer and a gross vehicle weight rating is. From meddlers post he has around 2000 pounds of gross left to a 2500 series truck. Betting your pin weight is closer to 3000 lbs.

Thanks guys. Keep it coming. I can't remember what the pin weight was on the trailer. I thought it was around 3000 but I'll have to double check. I was pretty sure I was ok in that side of it. It's just the trailer was ok to haul dry but not loaded if the 2500 is in deed only good for 14k.

If it's 3k u will be pushing it on your gvwr with a cab full of people and some gear in the box with a srw one ton. I think my buddies 2016 Chevy one ton has a payload of 3700 if I remember right. That leaves you only 700 for people and gear.

Imo even if your over a little you won't have issues.

I know my 3500 srw is over a bit towing our toyhauler

I never have the cab full of people. Or lots of gear in the truck that adds up to anything worth worrying about. But still going to tell them the combo won't work. They need to find me a one ton I like or I need to find a lighter trailer. Looked at some trailers and trucks today as well

Drove the one ton at the dealer. I liked the truck. Ride nice for a one ton.

Long box verse short box makes a big difference in towing as far as handling .
Short boxes are for 1/2 tons .IMO

Not sure I agree. Got out of a long box dually 1 ton GMC (gas powered) and moved to a Dodge diesel short box to pull my fiver. Pulls fantastic with the short box although less room to throw useless sh*t in "just in case I might need that."

For a daily driver a short box would certainly be handier than the LB CC. Depends what you like and what you are using it for.
