Can anyone suggest a good home builder in the Edmonton area? Or maybe there is a fellow snow and mudder that works for one?

I have looked around a bit and the prices seem drastically different if you head a bit out of the city. Beaumont is a lot cheaper than say Terwillegar area.

And recommendations?

It's cheaper, but if you work in the city and spend a lot of time in the city, IMO your better off paying the extra price for it. $20-40k savings seems like a lot, but think of how much extra fuel you'll buy. Now if you worked there or close, or out of town or whatever that would be where it makes sense.

I just bought, and ended up in the hamptons. Was considering spruce, stony, beaumont, etc but decided against it for the commute figuring it out, the savings on a house wouldn't even cover the extra fuel i'd burn. Plus time everyday has to be worth something.

As far as a good builder, good luck. Maybe a builder that you can deal with at best.
