new gps

We had 4 rino 650t in our group last week and I will never ride with out it again .... its so nice to just look on the screen and see where a guy is at especially when you ask him where he is at and his reply is the complete wrong way lol ... I got mine shipped up from the states and I think all total I was just over 500

if there are a few using the rino's it is worth owning, if it is only you they are just okay. There are better options out there, cheaper gms radio's and gps with bigger screens. i am still wobbling between the rino 650, don't need or want to pay for the t version, as the mapping is not very good. and the montana 600 or 650. not sure i want the camera in the gps as it will mark your photo with gps co-ordinates and that could lead to large fines. will see what the new year brings.

lowlife you have the montana 650t? do u use the camera at all? i see on another site that the camera is usually covered with mud and snow. and the guy says he rarely uses it, as the mount is a pain to get the gps out of.

not sure if it is required, but it may not be findable if it came off in the snow. i lost my rino out west of drayton valley in about 3 ft of powder snow. went to the ground as far as i could tell. tried to find it with a survey pin locator no luck. fell out of pocket, will have to take a look in the spring. was looking at a few replacement gps's, lots to choose from, oregon 400 on at gps city for $199, and i can get the montana 600 at communication group for $450. 490 for the 650 montana. just doing the him and ha right now. still like the rino 650 for what it can do. gps central had the cdn version on at $399.

Try GPS City out of Calgary, didn't buy my GPS there but they have some excellent mounting brackets and ideas there. I bought the RAM motorbike mounting kit for my Montana 650. Worked really well last week.

Hey guys... i have a cpl of questions, I'm wanting to get a GPS for sledding and quadding, but i dont need all the features that they come with, basically i want to be able to track, breadcrumb my trail,load back country software and be able to link with my computer for google maps, and the biggest option would be to be able to plug into 12 volt. I have had an old megellan 315 i was happy with the tracking and site marking but its just too old now, and bought a newer magellan 500 explorist, but am not happy with it, and both of them would use up batteries in the cold like crazy. i'm thinkin i should go with garmin as i hear they are more user friendly... I'd even be interested in buying a recent used one if anyone is upgrading

I am loving my 650. You can view it while riding and it worked flawlessly in the deep snow all weekend with the brp mount. I could ride up hill in deep snow looking for holes in the trees and just looking down occasionally to make sure I was close to the trail up. With the charging harness it is always on when the sled is on so no need to worry about batteries.

Never tried the camera but will have to remember next time as you can tag pictures to the location. The quality is not great from my tests at home.

Rolled the sled many times to get unstuck with out an issue.

well i became the proud owner of a new montan 600, got lots of learning to do. looks like it will do the trick.

aquires a good signal inside the house, will be excellent in the bush with overgrown trees.

the only difference is the 650 has the camera, otherwise they are the same, and price. my thought pn the camera was that it would be covered in mud all the time so the camera would be useless, besides my phone has a camera. seems like everyone i ride with now has a video camera, trying to get my antics on video. lol.

the camera on the montana will also record your gps position and if posted on u-tube or the other social BS sites, the srd can and will see them and fine your butt, if your doing something your not supposed to be doing.

Can someone explain why you would pay the extra $100-$120 for a T model vs.
a non?For example the Oregon 450 is 199 and the 450T is 299.If there is free
Canadian 50K topo map's all over the net,then why would you pay $100 to have a
unit preloaded with crappy 100K map's?Is there something else I'm missing?

went and looked at the montana 600 at cabelas today nice unit for 475...pretty thick...wonder how it would ride on quad they didnt have any holders be nice to get handle bar mount or something

the garmin T models have the garmin topo but it is next to useless, the backroads mapping and bushmaps have trails, roads and are updated. the canada topo has very little information, and i don't know if they even update the roads etc, for me the backroads is good, $119 at gps central for alberta. the camera i didn't need so i bought the montana 600, mainly for the bigger screen and chargeable battery. it also enables other maps and features the backroads has, shows sled and atv trails and fishing, camping spots listed in the backroads paperbooks. it is kind of nice. i got the 600 at communication group in red deer for $450, the best price i could find. it fits my purpose, you may find another model best suits your intented use.

i think the 600 is the way im going to go as well, like the dual battery...is the backwoods called the backwood i:have the books i assume its the same they had a few at cabelas but mostly just the street crap:with does me no good need the backcountry.

looks like they just updated the backroads maps, now v4 version at $150. for the alberta map. backroads gps version of the maps. if anyone purchased the last version, you can update to the new version. i purchased the alberta/ bc version.
