Yeah, may be the only route, but it I could find another engine for it it would probably be cheaper. Kind of a shame, as it has under 200km's on a new top end, and when it was brought back he was pretty much told there was no warrenty??

heres, my two cents..

get a real estimate... then decide... or ask for a second oppinion..n shop around not all shops, bail on there work... its called customer satisfaction and ethics....if at the least we could give u a deal on the parts n labour...
not too many wrecked ones out there...

let me know if i can help u out...

Looking for ideas on where to find a used engine for an 08 rhino 700. Also, is a Grizzly engine a direct swap, or is there differences??

The one in the machine got good and hot, shop says it is needs major overhaul. It's too bad, has only about 150 km's on a new top end:(

I think you shoud get a real estimate for parts and take that list and price the same parts out at apachemotorcycles.com in Arizona. What was going to cost me $900 here is going to cost me $400US from apache:eek:. Dont get me wrong,, I do buy local but i am going to Arizona later ths year for a week. As for the labour, do it yourself, its not as hard as you think to rebuild a 4 stroke. My 19 year old son changed out a piston on his LTR 450 race quad in under 3 hours by himself and a service manual, I was there watching and with some guidance:beer:. Hardest part was just getting the cams timed right:d Should also get the cylinder( peeling nicasil ) and head checked for warpage

I would call Yamaha corporate office and explain the situation. There must be a warranty for workmanship and the OEM parts they installed.

Scan a copy of the work order and post it. There is nothing to be scared of doing so if your story is all facts. Name the dealer.

Well got looking at the engine, might not be as bad as thought. Cylinder looks good, piston seems ok too. found the culprit, head gasket was for sure the problem. In the pics you can see where the combustion gasses were going into a coolant passage, enough that it actually discolored the head gasket. Two pictures are of the top of the gasket, and two are the bottom.

Overbore, not looking at badmouthing shops(too much). I have only what I was told, and what I can figure out by looking at the machine and engine. I have been working on all sorts of stuff for enough years to come up with a educated opinion on what happened though. I feel bad though, because it is a good friend of mines machine, and I think he got screwed, but that is just my two bits.

However, I could see how this happened though, I had to do the headgasket on my brothers Rhino a few months ago. It would run fine for about 40 minutes, then would slowely get hotter and push coolant out of the overflow bottle. Would still run fine, except you would notice the engine would ping (detonation) more under load or accelerating.

Let it cool off, top off the coolant and it would be ok for a while. Only thing is on the rhino's the top of the engine is above the fill cap on the rad, so if you don't have it parked with it's nose uphill, and the bleed screw off the t-stat housing, you can't get all the air out of the head.

I am thinking this is what this machine was doing, until it failed completely, and allowed a massive leak in the headgasket, which then cooked the engine.

Anyway, i will be posting up more pics as i tear into the engine and start doing the autopsy.
