Looking for ideas on where to find a used engine for an 08 rhino 700. Also, is a Grizzly engine a direct swap, or is there differences??

The one in the machine got good and hot, shop says it is needs major overhaul. It's too bad, has only about 150 km's on a new top end:(

Sounds like a Rotax your Rhino swap :)

But it would be cheaper to have someone who knows the engines look at it, the stealerships just try to rip you off on majors,.. well except Terry at T&T of course :)

you def need a 800 rotax, the griz engine is a bit different, the gearing is different inside the engine, you would gain speed with the griz engine, the ecu is not interchangeable between the 2, not sure if is the chassis wiring being different or the motor.

if it were me i would buy a manual, buy a HR stroker crank, stage one raptor hot cam, new bearings and piston and rings and tear into it. just do it somewhere clean and be super organized on how you lay stuff out as you take it apart, and you cant go wrong by taking lots of pictures

First thing to do if you decide to rebuild it is to take the case halves to a machine shop and get them to make sure they are true and not warped.

My vote is for the rotax swap. it'd be neat to see a rhino slaughter a racing quad in a drag.

Yeah, a rotax swap would be awesome!

But, I am just doing the work on it for a friend that just wants to get it going again. Looks like the head is toast for sure, rod might be done too, at this point damage is looking bad, would have to tear the engine right down.

Just trying to get a feel on what a donor engine would cost compared to a full rebuild.

Dang thing was in the shop, had a new top end put on it, took it for a few rides (150 to 190km's, can't remeber which he told me) when it apperently leaked the coolant out from the head gasket. Said he found a headbolt finger tight afterward. I imagine without coolant in the engine the temp light wouldn't work?? Long story short, it needs major work, or replacement.

Do the stock head bolts require a retorque?? The last one i worked on I put a 11:1 piston in and a stage 2 cam, really woke the engine up, but I also put in a set of head studs at the same time. MUCH better than the stock headbolts.

i say stroker! if the rod is toast anyway, prob cheaper or atleast no more expensive, and the extra torque would be sweet, sounds like the head was not torqued to spec of the bolts stretched, not sure on the 700, but my 450 the head bolts are torque to yield and they take lots to get tight, along with about 5-6 step procedure on how to, basically pretty easy to screw up or shortcut.

Yeah, saw a few sires where they were using a modified diamond drive as a transfer case so you could keep your four wheel drive. I thing they removed the reverse feature and made have 2 forward speeds. Hi and low range. Cool stuff!

I have my doubts your going to find a used engine for this machine. You need to find a good shop and get the thing rebuilt. I dont now why anyone would swap out a Yamaha engine for a Bombie.

because the 800 rotax makes 45-50 hp to the wheels and the 700 rhino makes less than 30

Yeah, may be the only route, but it I could find another engine for it it would probably be cheaper. Kind of a shame, as it has under 200km's on a new top end, and when it was brought back he was pretty much told there was no warrenty??

In this case, no coolant in the engine due to it leaking out past the head gasket.

Although it sucks that this happened, how can a dealer get a better reputation if they don't correct their fault or mistakes. On a side note,.. I check all fluids before I go for a rip, as well as check for leaks,.. its a habit I have always had,.. I even installed an engine temperature gauge, and the next on my list is oil temperature and voltage gauge. Right now I have an o2 wideband in the mail so I can maintain proper jetting on my 660.

I would like to know the name of this "dealer" and use my own judgment to decide if they deserve my business or any of my family and friends.
