need a little help from rifle experts

I'm looking for a good coyote rifle, and something for gophers. at first I was thinking a 17hmr for gophers since ammo is reasonably cheap and thought it may not be enough for coyotes, but would also like a 22-250 which would be i think good for coyotes but way overkill and expensive for gophers. I'll probably end up buying two but does anyone have suggestions on good brands or calibers for either?

looks like a ruger 10-22 with a diff stock, fun gun, not a good coyote gun, but awesome for gofers. Don't need the fancy stock, they work great with a 25 round clip and the speed loader

I'm not much of a shooter although I try to be. But something like a 22-250, 222, or 243 has a very fast, small bullet so it doesn't wander as much as say a 30-30 or .308 or something. Really this wouldn't matter unless your shooting at like 500 yards. Ever consider a 22 magnum?

I know what you mean though. 22 amo is dirt cheap so it's fun to blast away

The 22-250 has a bit too much recoil for gophers, (because it's nice to see the bullet hit) but it is great for yotes.
A .204 is a good choice for both.

You have to have a 22 because you can shoot like a mad man and it does not cost you anything. The 17HMR extends your 22 cal range out to 200 yds on a good day, but the bullet is small and is affected by the wind a fair bit. Most are tack drivers though.

As far as a coyote gun I would go for a 243 personally because I think you could use that for small game as well and is no more expensive to shoot than a 22-250 or 25-06 or swift etc. Every body has there magic calibre but most will do the job just fine. Also the cool thing about a 243 is the large availability of ammo so if you want varmint vs small game ammo there is a huge selection.

That being said if you shoot lots and need cheap there is always the 223 where you can buy surplus ammo but you won't exactly have a tack driver.

My personal experience I would look at CZ and or Tikka guns and Leopold and Bushnell optics. Go find a gun shop that works for you and get your wallet ready for a pounding.

I use a .22 for gophers but also the .17 cal works great, both awesome guns I'm my opinion. But as for coyotes I use a 243, best gun a guy could ever own, works work on everything I use it for hunting as well. Proud to say I use a 243!!!!

I agree .22 is the cheapest ammo you can find but the .17 is funner to shoot.

I have a savage accu trigger varmint series 22-250, which the stock was redone for sale, has folding bi pod and crazy sniper scope, just cant remember off hand what the scope is, PM if interested.

Have a look at the Ruger .204. I have one, reload my own ammo and let me tell you...this thing rocks. Gophers out to 400 m with ease. I have a vx3 32 power glass on it.

Coyotes I use a Tikka T3 - 22-250, they are a really nice rifle and a fast bullet. For gophers I just use a Lakefield 64B .22 semi. And for magpies I use my Mossberg JIC 12 gauge. Proper tool for the proper job, I always say :d

I have a dozen 22's, and the lightest rifle i have for coyotes is a 243 i bought last year for my son for whitetail, never thought about it for coyotes, but i suppose it would work well with a smaller grain bullet. thought about 223 but was told they get hot fast. thanks for your help guys, going shopping in a couple weeks.

By dogs you mean "prairie dogs"? Or coyotes? Thought you just moved from Lacombe or was that Mirror

Ya my .204 is my funnest boom stick for small defenseless critters unless there camp squirrels then my 870 marine magnum comes out to play :d
