I got a 2008 Chevy Silverado 1500 crew 4X4 with the 5.3L flex. Right now its got a Magnaflow 3" Cat-back and an AFE intake. I'm looking for a little more Oomph with my truck, it doesn't like to break the wheels out as good as my friends '05 Ram 5.7L regular cab. His is pretty much stock except for a pipe and Superchip.

I've been looking at getting another chip and possibly a few other goodies too. But as far as programmers go, I'd rather not get another Edge. My last one was a rough ride with extremely notchy shifting in every mode it was in.

Also I'm looking into a better intake, my AFE one doesn't protect the filter enough, it's constantly getting wet. I've ben looking into Banks, but I'm open to suggestions.

So, what do you got on your 5.3L Vortec's and how do you like it?

Get a custom tune done to it and remove some of the torque management and bump up the timing

a throttle body and a set of edelbrock headers.

Yeah, them TB spacers sound good. Which spacer is a good one to go with? I've heard from others that Edelbrock headers are good too.

How much more are custom tunes and where can I get it done? Some places charge like 99 bucks an hour to use their dyno.

Not 100% sure, but mine may have a 4.10. It's the Z-71 off-road, with max tow package, and a bunch of other neat stuff. Any way of checking to make sure?

If you search on GM fullsize forum they will all say that a tb spacer is garbage on a GMT900 truck, I put mine on with my intake and I noticed a difference but did the tb spacer really do anything, not sure. I'm running the airraid intake and spacer and their made to work with each other.

I'm looking for a programmer as well, mainly for reacaling for bigger tires and maybe a towing upgrade, all programmers leave a footprint in the ecm so the dealer can tell you've had one even if you remove and stock flash before taking it in but they told me as long as you werent abusing it then their shouldnt be warranty issues but they can still void it, FYI

Hey there,

I just upgraded from my 08 5.3 to an 11 6.0L 2500hd. I had pretty much the same mods as you, magnaflow exhaust, afe cold air intake, throttle body spacer and hypertech programmer. Now unfortunately, with the gas engines, the programmer will give you the least "bang for your buck" IMO. I tested them all, Hypertech, Bully Dog, Superchips, Diablo. The chevy engines perform the best on the Hypertech.

One of my suppliers, Custom Truck Parts, introduced me to a product called " sprint booster" SprintBooster Power Converter - www.SprintBoosterSales.com

Out of all the mods I have done on my 5.3L, the sprint booster was the best bang for your buck. They are around $325-$350, but what they do is take the electronic "lag" that happens on the throttle on the Chevy 5.3L. What it does is boost the voltage on your "gas pedal" to tell the engine to give it more fuel. It actually really works. Check out the website, and if you like the idea, Give my buddy Paul a call at Custom Truck Parts in Edmonton or if you would like you can give me a call and I could hook you up!

Good luck in your mods!

Just my 2cents. Shoulda bought a ford then no questions

Lol

The reason we buy gm's is we like to hang onto them for more then a month, if you own a ford you might as well leave the keys in it, cause if it hasnt already been stolen it will be.:d

First off no offense to your buddy or the product, but the sprintbooster in my experience is smoke and mirrors. Granted I havent tried one on a truck but I have tried them on cars, they take the initial lag out but it doesnt add more fuel or anything like that. It just removes the lag delay between the pedal to throttle body dbw system.

Thanks for the help everyone! I really appreciate it. Right now I just gotta sort through my options and research 'em a little more.

BTW, I don't want a Ford, lol... I've been in 'em... The 5.4L's I've been in could all be dusted off by my Chevy.

I don't know about that my 5.4 and my buddies 5.3 run neck and neck when we race. And i will out tow him any day. And the f150 raptor i have in my bay goes like a son of a biotch. Any way back on the subject at hand out of all the pissing around with gas jobs I have done the only true way to gain hp with out touching the motor it self (eg. bore, cams, etc) is to boost it. you can buy all the fancy crap you want on it but nothing will put any real hp to the ground.

Raptors are nice but I'm not much of a ford person. My buddy's dad has an '03 F-150 5.4L had nothing to it. The '06 wasn't bad but still wasn't impressive. I know the 5.3's aren't overly spunky but every ford I've been in WOT my chev could do better. My Mom's 4.6L Sport Trac is the quickest Ford pickup I've driven.

But I'd have to say that the fastest half ton I've been in was an '09 Ram. That had some serious pull to it and the stock dual exhaust was the best sounding.

I am just giving you a hard time, but like i said you need to save some pennies and boost that thing than no dodge would touch you. I wouldn't waste my money on the other little chit cause none of will make that big of a diff, exhaust just makes them loud, cold air just sucks dirt, boost makes power.
My 5.4 is gona get cam's and intake this summer then maybe boost after i get some body work done. Drove a supercharged 5.4 and that went like stink.
I use my truck for pulling and working though so I am not in a rush to make it go fast.

Thats all good. Different trucks for different people. Mine is just a commuter so reliability is a must, and I tow my quad every now and again. Going truck bogging or breaking the rear tires loose with a few friends is always nice too.

I've been looking at a few boost kits and they are quite costly, and I'm sure a tune is also in order when switching to forced induction.

I'm leaning more towards a turbo because I'm not a fan of how a supercharger sounds. The high pitched whine of some of the twin screw kits isn't fitting for a truck.. JMO I'd rather deal with turbo lag cuz I've driven boosted vehicles before... Whistle is better that whine personally.

For a tune go to black bear performance. They custom tune to your mods and can take out the TM. They've done plenty so a dyno isn't nessecary. Also headers are a big help. I've heard a cam swap can make them come alive. I had an 05 that had everything but the cam and it ran hard but with 3.42s it still wasn't a puller. Bought a 2010 gmc with the 6.2 and 3.73 and it pulls very good. Also have u checked out sts turbos?

Everyone of the forums preaches aftermarket tune for the best performance. YES, great but I like my warranty, so until im out of warranty the blackbear tune is a no go (can you even get a blackbear tune here?). so I too amy looking for the best programmer but mostly for speedo recalibrate and maybe some pulling torque.
