So I’m out ditch bangin with a bud who’s fresh off a broken leg (thankfully not deep in the bush!). Taking it easy, nothing crazy. Sled dies. Haul it home and compression test it. 144 psi on pto side, 50 on mag side. Pull head and find this disaster. What the hell happened here?? Locating pin broke and ring spun? Thought that was a 2011 thing...

This is on my 2013 summit XM 800 with 1800 kms. I thought etec’s of this era (13-16) were bulletproof.

Wondering:
What caused this - what should I be checking to make sure it doesn’t happen again?
What can I do to fix this?? Realize I need a top end kit but what are my options for the block - new OEM lists at $1200... Mine is cracked on the bridge, can it be fixed?

hard to say without the piston out but i would make sure the oiling system is operating properly


reman monoblocks are 600$ and a piston kit around 300$. back in business for less than a grand

Check on kijiji. There is a guy in Castlegar parting out an xm. He is selling the engine SUPER cheap. $400 bucks for the whole thing (has 8000km on it). Gives you a new cylinder and a bunch of other spare parts.

I need to finish the tear down and will see exactly what happened then but this all happened the day before leaving on vacation. Pulled the head, saw the cylinder, threw a rag over it and walked away.

Thanks for the tip on reman. I see the crank shop and mcbperformance have remans online. Is that where you’d recommend, or anywhere else I should check? Regarding pistons, I’m thinking Wiseco, rktek or OEM... other thoughts?

i buythe cylinder from Motts Machine here in edmonton he sells CVtech Re manufactured. Then i Buy Wossner Dual ring piston kit from Specailty Sleds...who also sells the reman blocks i just found out. Ive had Great luck with MCB dual ring and Wossner Dual ring. Cant go wrong with the factory BRP piston either.

if you can get it all from MCB i wouldnt Hesitate to go that way either.

Why don’t you give a call to dean at mad motors or Brent at Arctic edge, they may have a crank and recommend what pistons to use. My experiences I’d stay away from rkt, and wiseco are fine if you warm up properly.

seen a complete motor on a fb page for $1100 with 1700km I believe it was ....2013

Can check out Recreation Supply in Saskatoon. Thats where I got my wossner dual ring piston kit and a top end gasket set. They also have re manufactured cylinders as well last time I looked. They have always been great for me and fast shipping.

I hate forged pistons for many reasons, the warm up, they don't hold oil as good, they tend to wear cylinders out and can skirt super easy from piston slop

In a dirt bike there better, but sled the coolant can go from warm to to cool fast, were a bike is more consistent

Also trystad says all of the above and uses cast in his mods Rotax

I’ll let you know what I see once I finish the tear down to see if there’s a cause I should be looking for. It’s tricky enough convincing wifey this will only cost a couple hundred bucks so hope it doesn’t happen again right away after lol.

Haha should have convinced her on about a $2500 fix then should be real happy when it's only about $1250... cause you got everything on sale.

Doesn't MCB just work over the Wossner pistons and rebrand them? Maybe I'm confused.

want a do it yourself big bore. send the jug off to CV tech, tell em your running Catt 800 HO pistons in it. Pickup pistons from a 800 HO cat, you will have a 860 with dual ring setup and their a cast piston.
What about head cut ect to match???

Call someone ;). Linderman can cut it for you, I am sure powder freaks could. They are merely just opening it up the .060 thou for the larger piston.

or just run it.
