Meal Replacement, Protein shakes, good health and fitness in genral

So to all the health and fitness buffs out there, whats your take on shakes, meal replacement bars and the like?

I'm by no means unhealthy or unfit, but I'm finding as I get older my work gets less physical, and that's all it took to stay fit. I don't have a as much time to dedicate to the cause either, so I'm curious what some REAL people have to say about meal replacement shakes and bars.

I realize there is no one thing to keeping in shape, I'm just curious if these are worth even looking into.

Troy, the best advice I can give is to go to a doctor who will test all the various elements in your body. I will PM one, who IMHO, is fantastic.

My daily routine includes a homemade smoothie; almond milk, avocado, cinnamon, spirullina, 2 raw eggs, protein powder (without sweetners), iodine, banana, blue berries, sometimes apple, sometimes mixed berries, sometimes pineapple, hemp seed, chia seed, cod liver oil, and flax oil. Along with that are a mixture of supplements (the Dr. found that I was lacking in these elements) of selinium, zinc, Vit A, B12, C, zinc, magnesium, lecithin, and a few prostate items. I have cut out the white flour (wheat belly book by Dr. Davis is a good read) and sugar. Yes, there is still some but for the most part, white flour and sugar are gone. I am supposed to cut out caffeine and alcohol but those are choices that I make and live with. I won't cut out everything as some things are just too enjoyable!

His testing is extensive and they give you a good base to start with. I have been there for a year and several issues have been cleared up and the local doctors could give a dam! I have more energy, feel better, and I'm in pretty good shape (for an ol' fart). The testing people keep saying, "whatever you are doo-ing, keep on the routine as it is serving you well".

I doo believe that living at elevation and relative isolation is to my advantage. Clean healthy living (cooking real food, no cans nor packages or at least minimal of processed food) goes a long way for feeling great.

Get the Whey protein isolate, chocolate, vanilla which ever flavor you like. If you're working out it will help you put on lean muscle mass. If you're not working out it will probably still help.

You can be fit and strong but still be fat.
You can be strong and skinny but not fit.

So on and so on.

I bike 23km a day, (biked 2400km since April) fast as i can. Work out at lunch.

Ive been on and off a diet since april. When i say diet i mean 3 some what balanced meals and 2 snacks in between.

Not a crazy diet, not really a diet, basically eating normal or what everyone should and the calories i need for my weight.

But.... Had a few hiccups. On a hiccup now. Basically just maintaining my weight, getting stronger, still fit but weights at a stand still. Soon as i get back to normal meals weight drops.

I take a multivitamin pack in the am, cla pills daily. I drink 2-3 liters of water a day with xtend blue raspberry for flavor and repairs muscles, speeds recovery, burns fat. Then i take a pre workout, mr hyde before i work out. Then a protein shake after work out.

You need to make everything apart of your routine till it just happens. Easier you make it fit with your lift the better. I commute on a bike to work, way easier than a treadmill for a hour. I work out at lunch cause luckily we put a gym in.

My eating has gone to **** last 5 years, wife and i are on different schedules, started a business, going onto house number 4 end of this month, renovations to last 3 houses, had a kid..... Just life in general, no time to cook and prep or think about food so a bad decision is an easy one.

Protein shakes are better than meal replacement ones. Bars.... Take your pick but i like clif bars just cause they are delicious. There is also green drinks at the super market we get, alot of mornings a clif bar and a green drink was a hell of alot better than a bagel with cream cheese from tims.

just eat ALMOST what ever you want, BUT keep it in proportion, and NEVER eat till your full. Eat your 6-7 meals a day and and get some exercise in 3+ time a week.

Nope not really, you can workout all you want and eat like **** and your not going to get skinny. You can eat your calories in pizza for the day and starve cause you cant live off 2 pieces of pizza for the day.

Anyways, back to your question, protein shakes and meal bars are dietary supplements. They are to supplement your diet, real food is always more beneficial than any powder or meal replacement bars.

It basically comes down to what you want to achieve. If you are looking to shed some weight(to gain horse power) but to increase strength(for mobility on the sled). I would suggest finding a protein powder(or bar) that's low in calorie, high in protein and a flavour that will taste good with water. You have to be consistent with it, in order to see results, at least give it a month.

I started Isagenix last year and then went off for about 8 months and I regretted it. Back on it now and wow what a difference. Take one in the morning and one at lunch and a regular supper in the evening. Not a big drinker but never said no to a beer either. I bought the vanilla flavour, put 2 cups of water, a banana or frozen fruit, chia seed and good to go. Fills me up nicely for the day.

I went on Isagenix as well for 30 days. Was not as hard as I thought. Lost 23 lbs. I want to lose a total of 50 so I have a ways to go yet. I was overdue to lose the weight. My wife is very health conscious so that made it alot easier for me. The main meal I kept to about 600 calories with low carbs and fat with high protein. It really come down to changing my eating habits. Remember drink lots of water!!!

Cutting back on carbs and upping protein, what does joint pain and knee replacements have in common.

Are you saying that upping protien and cutting back in carbs will create joint pain? My knees were in bad shape last year mainly because of being overweight and not enough excersize. This year my knees feel great!

I personally enjoy this product, especially when training(Muay Thai)before and after sometimes, or as a start up in the morning. I've tried a few other products from them, i liked all I've used. Most frequent would be the Isoblic protein (great mid morning, post workouts and before bed protein). Cheers.

Ill second bodybuilding.com as well.





I use this to help with the joint issues (Muay Thai takes its toll on the knees and elbows)
