Hi all,

What is everybody using for mapping apps/regional info when out sledding? What do you like/dislike about your favourite picks? Do you think the market is missing something? What features are important?

Thanks!

Gaia you can download map of the the area you are riding and there is a desktop app where you can make your own routes add way points etc before going out. There are a few different map type you can select sat, canada topo, caltopo open street maps.

You got to download the area you are riding with the map type you want before heading out. They have good online FAQ when you go to their website.

That I have.
Just sometimes it doesnt map my tracks. Shows me the locator arrow as to where I am, but no tracks.
Doesnt matter which icon I push.
Other times it tracks me perfect.

So could be a glitch with my download.

Any map, photo, screen shot can be located and will show tracks on it per your ride.

Google earth also works.

I had one phone when you put it in power save mode would turn off the GPS.

If a GPS app is not working in airplane mode, it is utter rubbish.

I use backcountry navigator pro. It's a bit technical, but the maps you can get for it are very detailed. I'm waiting for never lost to be released on Android though.

I use memory maps, it will load up all the caribou closures from the bc websites as well. Then Google earth when you need to wiggle through the trees.

Dawizman - when you say technical what do you mean? What are issues that arise here?
The app is very versatile, so there are a lot of options. Therefore the user interface takes a bit of use to understand how everything works. You also need to load your own boundaries for the areas, as well as pre- download the map data required for the specific area you're riding so that it will work without internet.

I quite like the app, but some users might have trouble using it.

X-it - what kind of maps do you use with Memory Maps?
They do have a ton of maps for sure. I use the topo 1:50000 the most. Memory maps have been around since the 1990 so they always work perfectly better than a gps by a mile every square is 1k so easy to estimate distances. They also have satellite links so people at home can tell were you are but you need cell coverage for it to work

They do have free maps that work quite well to try out, you will have to learn how to down load the area or it will not work offline. I have not tried their nautical maps yet. I bought the topo dvds 25 years back so I have all of bc and alberta on my phone and tablet, with a 3rd party licensing agreement which can be purchased from memory maps. I can actually take my laptop and run it offline in the middle of the bush and have amazing gps capability using memory maps.
