so I bought a new billet t handle and while changing it out, the rope slipped out of the fingers and......you guessed it.....

so I bought a new billet t handle and while changing it out, the rope slipped out of the fingers and......you guessed it.....

i put a 700 ves engine into a 2004 pro-xr factory race sled. I broke the recoil rope which was no big deal until I figured out I had to pull the engine in order to access the bolts that hold the recoil cover.

Pulled the engine, replaced the rope. Put it back together, didn't work. I did something wrong. Pull the engine again. Do it right and install the engine. Doesn't work right again. Pull the engine.

This time I had a friend show me the right way to do it. Reinstalled the engine and then did the same thing you did. Had to pull the engine for the 4th time.

Now I tie a granny knot about a foot from the end of the rope while attaching the handle. If it slips out, it will recoil until the knot hits the recoil cover.

Another idea is vice grips on the rope.

I have a knot permanently tied 6 inches from my recoil handle for that very reason! Last year my recoil rope broke at the handle and spent the rest of the day trying to start my sled with that little plastic piece of $h!t in the tool kit.

I've heard of guys 'Kickstarting' engines before too. Not sure how well that works.

is it a pain to get? i know on the doos its about a ten minute job to get the rope back.

i feel your pain though. i was looking up at a line and my friends were egging me on. got up my confidence....commited to it...pull the cord...and there is nothing but a handle in my hand. yeehaw...i now tie a good knot in the handle and burn the end

Maybe that happened for a reason???

I used vice-grips and clamped down on the rope about a foot down from the handle when I changed mine out. I didn't know it could get sucked in... Just thought it made it easier.

that is pretty crappy but i got one worse! roll an apex and have the key break off in the ignition! I pulled the broke part out with needle nose but i still couldnt start the sled! luckily i had my spare in my truck! sent a buddy to the truck and got my spare. now i keep a spare in my backpack!

Oh yeah they will just slip right through the hole and then you get to hear the recoil unwinding..... :D

I tie a knot in mine as soon as the handle is off, then it doesn't get sucked in. Had the same thing as a couple of others mentioned, tied the knot too close to the end of the cord on my big cat, went to pull it and the knot "tightened" past the end of the cord and zoom - she was gone into the housing! LOL thankfully I was still in the garage so had alll the tools right there. I leave at least 6" of rope sticking out now....LOL

what if you put a zip tie or something down near the recoil so when it does break it doesnt get sucked in?

Usually the cords have to run through a tube guide - not much bigger than the rope diameter - the zip tie would have to be small enough to fit through it but big enough to not get sucked into the recoil. If you made it small enough to fit through the tube, it would probably fit through the recoil hole (about the same size as the tube) so it might not work. Even if you didn't have to trim it, it would catch on the stuff under the hood and it would need to fit outside the sled as well since you pull at least a couple feet of cord out of the recoil starter. I don't think there is a simple fix unfortunately.

i just notched the metal plate on my pro x2 on the mag side so it could be pulled apart without pulling engine, worked like a charm

Been in your shoes... I have a 999 Cat twin in a Rev and I have to pull the motor, or at least the mount bolts, carbs and exhaust to get it tipped up far enough I can get the recoil out. Got tired of that racket and put a brand new recoil on it with an upgraded rope. Thought I had it licked until I was yarding on the rope trying to start it after I rolled it over and it was partially flooded and the knot came uncorked at the handle. Learned another lesson there. Tie the right knot. Leave a bit of cord out of the end of the knot and melt it slightly with a lighter. Been good ever since.

ya you better tie a big knot in that m1000 recoil there clarky you might pull the whole recoil off trying to start that beotch :D

I have had it outside since I left Valemount on December 30th, I can pull it over at all. I have been tinkering forever just taking parts off and its not getting much easier:(

vice grips not that good an Idea. they have sharp jaws that can damage your rope. The Granny knot is a good idea.
