Seems like all parts. Bought handwarmer elements last year that were priced at $15 more than MSRP. I just said, "wow, those are expensive" and the parts guy immediately said he can do better and dropped them 10%. On the oil, same thing. Say WOW, and they dropped the price to $65 from $85. So not really sure of their strategy. Regardless, now I need to always call and see what the price is going to be before heading over and I always need to look up MSRP to be sure.are they marking their parts up like that too, or just oil?
I've yet to find a dealer in BC that discounts oil even the big dealers that could easily sell it in bulk and pass on some savings don't. Once when I picked up my snowcheck I got 10 or 15% off a couple jugs but nothing after that. This has been mostly Doo dealers though. Honestly it pushes a guy to use a non OEM oil since I get great discounts at the local auto parts store that sells 2T oils with actual JASO ratings instead of just fear mongering about warranty engine coverage.This is just brutal!
To shed a little light on how most dealers work when it comes to oil. Oil is a very very high mover and huge profit maker for most dealers. Oil is typically ordered at the shows on a pre season order, cat has always gave the dealers additional discounts on large quantities of oil. The more you buy the bigger discount your going to get. 60+% discount is not unheard of.
I used to order the oil in by the drums, and by the multiple pallets hundreds of cases. I sold a lot of oil. I made it about the customer, I always made money on my oil in the end because it’s a business at the end of the day but in my opinion the oil is a tool to maintain the relationship with existing customers and build relationships with new customers.
This actually really makes me mad seeing oil being sold this way its just another reason why I’m not in the industry at a dealership level anymore it’s no longer about the passion for the sport it’s about the passion for the money
I always liked to pass on the discount to the consumer as much as I could we would have pre season oil sales with huge discounts like 25-30% oil to drive the customers into the store. Or one of my fav is the buy 2 jugs get your 3rd for free kind of type things. There is lots of ways to do it, you just need to be creative.
I would often toss in a free jug of oil with a purchase of a new sled or snow check delivery, but the drum in the back was what it was all about. I would always tell my customers to bring back the empty jug that I have lots of drums in the back and we will refill your container at a discounted price from the containers up front. That is where you get to take your customer into the back with you and show them what your working on, show them your new sled and learn about them, what they did on the weekend and learn about what there happy about and not happy about. If they are happy with there sled if there buddy Johnny might be looking for a new sled, and if they want to put any cool go fast parts on there sled before there next trip. Better yet now you can make plans with them to go riding!! You can learn a lot about a person in 5 mins refilling a jug of oil with them. I’ve heard it all, things I can’t say on here lmao oh good times!!!
Cranking up the price 30% above MSRP and hoping your customers don’t notice is just some bean counter being lazy who has no passion for the industry and thinks he’s going to be a hero and make some extra money this month.
This industry is based on the relationship with the customer. When you lose the relationship with the customer and you start doing things like this to profit for your own well being this is when the dealer staff start leaving for different jobs because they can’t even look there customers in the eyes when they are selling them a jug of oil anymore, the dealers start disappearing 1by1 and closing the doors, customers don’t want to support the dealer in return because they have idiots working for them and then just end up ordering everything online or drive to another town for a jug of oil
i also noticed a difference in pricing from central alberta red deer and calgary with calgary being 15-20% higher for the same part
