Thanks Sledderglen, I have a spot too and do like this better but really what I use these for mostly is to let Kim know where I am as without cell coverage and coming home in the dark most days lets her know I am still alive. The best things about inreach over spot personally are better sat coverage and globally, as I used it in Peru and Baja as well as the light that lets you know it sent and how it works with my iphone...the other weekend I busted an a-arm at Grizzly Lodge on the first day. I used it to text the boyz at RTR Performance in Kamloops and they left a lower a-arm out for some guys to pick up and it was at grizzly Lodge and on my sled that night...it was pretty cool to do that from this piece of gear! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the sledders and their families!! dave

Dave.... how is this any better than a satellite phone? and how is Grizzly Lodge so far, got a trip booked there

Hey Steve10 I would say the Sat Phone is the best but at $1000.00 plus $500.00 for minutes min package the inReach or Spot is much cheaper. My buddy has a sat phone and we have used it more to help other than us but for most a sat phone is too pricey. The inReach is $200.00 with a mail in rebate and $15.00 a month so a lot cheaper. Grizzly Lodge is on! We had perfect snow and it is deep already. Check out their page on facebook as Adam is posting vid and photos...have a great trip there! dave

Dusting this thread off....

I have the Spot 2 and this year the check in messages have been slow and unreliable at best. I have it set to email myself and my wife. I like it for the "Look where we made it today" part. But when the messages do go, they take forever. So it wouldn't do much for me in an emergency. Doing a bit of reading about the in reach, sounds pretty neat. Pairing it with my iPod to 2 way text intrigues me. Anyone have any experience with that? How long does it take to send the average message? And can you send a pic?

Thanks

I have a inreach and pair it with my iPhone over Bluetooth. If I put it in airplane mode I can use a GPS app to track us all day and send and receive MSG's from the inreach. Battery lasts all day with no issues.

I too had a spot before, the inreach sends MSG's with in a couple minutes, once the MSG sent verification comes up it is around 45sec to 120sec and my wife will have the txt MSG. Emails may take a extra minute it seems.

Any other questions just ask

I had a spot before the inreach and I too am impressed with how fast messages are sent. I use the inreach for lots of things and believe in its ability when the crap may one day hit the fan, but until then its biggest use for me is to let my girlfriend know that I am safe and it has not missed a beat yet and is much faster than the spot. The iridium sat network is the key to faster and better messages.

Has anyone had any first hand knowledge of the Pieps Globalfinder? It looks to be the Cadillac of all locators but the price is up there at about $850. But if it replaces your GPS and outperforms all the others it might be worth it.

The In Reach also uses the Iridium satellite network which is infinitely better than the Global Star network that Spots use. I own lots of Sat Phones from the different companies that my crews take out in the bush and the Global Star phones are not reliable. They are kind of dangerous as they give a false sense of communication.

I like the idea of cheaper 2 way texting and I think I will try a few of the In Reachs out this summer and see how they work.

Not sure about the iPod, but the blue tooth connection with the android phones can be pretty flakey with inreach
I have found this to be the case as well with my android, takes a few minutes of messing around to get them to pair. I always shut my cell phone off after texting, and to pair them up again takes a few minutes of messing around. if I don't turn off the phone they seem to remain paired okay, but I'm worried about the battery dying on the android. for the most part I just use the InReach like the Spot, to send check in messages.
