I have ran a variety of setups and this one best so far, every handle round, oval or square coated or uncounted has freezing issues when trying to extend them. This setup takes 2 seconds to remove and reattach no extending on handle needed.I still have a teaspoon shovel that’s on my back pack.

I carry the same BCA shovel on my back that I have mounted on the box - with the slide style I find that I just have to twist the 2 halves in opposite direction and it always comes apart - with my setup in the picture it usually extends itself as I pull it out of the holders - ready to give it the gawd damn biscuits

There was a good video online that I watched not long ago showing how weak those "D" handle shovels are - I personally think the BCA shovels that go into hoe mode are quality shovels and they can move alot of snow quickly - everytime I've been in hoe mode digging the dirty out - I always have had people comment on the amount of snow that has been evacuated

Funny you posted that, attended a Avalanche Symposium in 1987 and one of the Guest Speakers mentioned a #8 Aluminum Grain Scoop.Him and his friend were back country skiing when the fellow speaking was buried face up in a slide. His friend skied with a Grain Scoop on his back and when he digging him out scooped a chunk of meat off the bridge of his nose.He laughed about it and never complained,he had pretty good scar to show.

I guess nothing unbrakable, but I think a high percentage of the times if the Snow is Rock Hard your recovering a body not live rescue.I can attest to this first hand as I was caught in large slide west of the Columbia Ice Fields in 2008.It was 2:00 pm +10c NW Aspect, when I dug myself out approx 10 min had passed.I got on my sled and was climbing out of bowl over a 4’ deposit at toe of slide,I eased into expecting it to be firm
and was Very Soft.I was full throttle after that and I was running a 20”x174” track.
