We go through this one every year...LOL

Final word is 1.2m (48") from TRUCK tail lights (NOT deck markers) requires light at night and a flag by day. Flag needs to be certain size and there's a spec on how big the light needs to be too, can't recall off hand what it is.

I am not going to argue if you need it or not, just provide the regs I found through a search. If you need further info to that to which I have found, its best to go right to the source.

In AB

Overhanging load
16(1) During nighttime, a load that overhangs the rear of the
vehicle carrying it by 1.5 metres or more must have a lit red lamp
on the back of the load.
(2) During daytime, a load that overhangs the rear of the vehicle
carrying it by 1.5 metres or more must have a red or orange flag
that is not less than 300 millimetres square on the back of the load.

In BC

(2) A vehicle on a highway must not carry a load or have an integral part of the vehicle which projects more than 1.2 m to the rear of the load-deck or body of the vehicle unless,

(a) during the time specified in section 4.01, the extreme tip of the projection is lighted with a lamp that is capable of displaying only red light visible from a distance of 150 m to the rear of the vehicle, and

(b) at any time other than that specified in section 4.01, a red flag or cloth that complies with section 8.05

So if you are in AB, going into BC you will be subject to their overhang requirements. Pretty simple if you wish to follow it.

I have edited to include the source I pulled it from. I am not sure if these are the most current regs but it was what I could find. Also we have been talking about this for at least 6 years, maybe someday we can just have a sticky lol

it is 1.5m past the tail lites on the truck.... not auxiliary lites on a deck

That info came from the owner of a deck manuf company, and his wife is a cop. Not all deck extensions come with lights so that law would apply to them. Full lotus has marker/brake lights as well are tgey tsil lights no but they are lights that the law is asking for.
That law is for people who put their tailgate down and put a load in the back so therefore the solid light at the back of the load applied same as if i had a 10 ft sled on a 6ft deck. Same as the regs posted above.
Dunno that what was explained to me and ive never been hassled with my deck and lights.

And then it becomes the discretion of the LEO or Governing body if a sled deck is considered a load deck or an accessory or an integral part of the vehicle.

Since the regs are written in black and grey it's up to the individual to decide how they want to mark their vehicles overhang with the case of sled decks and sleds.

Get a good cop and it's a non issue. Get a less than forgiving one who interprets the regs a different way and off to court you go to fight it.

Damn auto correct

I bought a trailer wiring kit from Princess Auto for 39.99. It's two lights with a 4 prong flat wiring connector and all I do is zip-tied the lights to the track. It doubles as a set of brake lights on the track as well as a signal light for each sled as long as you get the lights zip tied to the right side.

I thank you very much sir .

I've been running that deck since 08, been through check stops, and had RCMP follow me at night in valemount.
No issues maybe because my deck is in a 1 ton and not a half ton lol.

To each his own.

You know my first reaction was this was a silly question but I did come around quick once I engaged my brain. The issue is purely one of visibility so if the light was intense enough during daylight hours, you would probably not have any grief from the law. Having said that, flags are cheap, easy to bungy on to the back of the sled and why not remove the temptation for a traffic stop?

Perfect. Flag by day, light by night. Plain and simple. I don't want to be pulled over, but if I am I want to be legal.

I've never heard of anyone getting pulled over for sled overhang on the back of the truck or on sled deck?
As far as I'm concerned there's other issues to worry about on your 6" lift deleted diesel spraying rocks while doing 120 km/h....

Doesn't have to be for overhang. Could be a speeding ticket, random check stop or whatever. Just one less thing to pick on if you're pulled over.

Out here in BC it has become quite normal to run across a CVSE/RCMP road check, and they go through EVERYTHING, tire checks, light, driving lights, weights.

I put one of these on my track. Flag and a light.

I've seen people wire them up with quick connects to their trucks.

For sure, most guys I hear getting pulled over are lifted diesels, being high/loud/bright gets attention. My stock half ton doesn't get nearly the attention of one of them rigs. Not saying it's a bad thing to follow these rules, just saying this is low risk in my mind.
