Ok here is a good one
Sold my old 08 XP and the guy that bought it had a problem using the e-start. Here are the problems he is now having

1.He would push the button and it will crank but no start... pull start worked fine (last season)
2. he can run it and the lights and dash will flicker then it stalls at ide. if he keep the rpm up its fine

The first one I suggested that it might be the reverse multifunction switch. (last year) He then took it into "a shop in town". they tore the engine down and said it might be reeds, compression, ecm and $3000 later and the end of the season he got it back. Engine was fine... problem not fixed

The second one (this year) we tested stator and found low readings when testing one of the windings and low voltage at 5000rpm. we followed the manual tests. He took it back to the shop and asked to have the stator and voltage regulator replaced. after a week and a half they said they couldn't find a problem and he said why are you diagnosing it just replace the parts

What a screw up he has going on.... any guess on what might be going on?
I only have limited info
Sad part is it ran GREAT when I had it

Thanks
Rich

And he said its coming with a healthy bill. I own an Autopro repair shop in Calgary and if I don't diagnose something right the first time I make sure the customer is taken care of and stand behind my work 100%. Will wait to see what they said and let you know

Check for a short in the wiring. I had my brake/ tail light short once and it made the dash go funky and then it died. I watched it happen because I had the wires for the brake disconnected and stripped just sticking out in the air and I started it up, a couple seconds later the wires kinda fell over and touched the tunnel it started sparking and zapping then the dash started beeping and it died. I thought for sure I had cooked something, but it was ok.
I bet something similar is going on with your old sled, but by revving it up the stator makes enough juice to overcome the problem and run ok. Maybe it's not even a short, could be a crappy ground too and those can wreak havoc also. Good luck !

There is a braided ground strap attached to one of the motor mounts and to the frame. They are famous for corroding out and breaking. It will cause all sorts of wierd electrical issues. Also agree with check the tail light wiring. It tends to get squashed and rub through under the tank. Hope that helps. Good luck.
