Took PE to get out of Sk and back to AB, but industry saturation (power engineers are a dime a dozen now) means that wont be happening. Also thinking of retraining but to what? Who knows anymore what a good field is..

With an attitude like this you will be standing in line at the pogey office.

Power engineering has opened up many opportunities for me over the last 20 years that were not in the patch.

Like now, my business is property maintenance and building operations. High end Resort condo buildings need someone to run them.

I'm going to hang in there and wait for the oil industry to get a government bail out.

With an attitude like what? He said there are more PE's than there is job's for them.
So by stating that, he has an attitude problem? REALLY?
Maybe PE has worked for you, but I bet I could find HUNDRED's at least in my area alone.
(with ticket's and not working in that field.) And I would assume the boiler system in a resort
or where ever else wouldn't require a 4th. (5th I think is like a 2 day course for building maint.)

5th course is 90 hrs and 6 months exp. But I thinks it's a waste of time if your going to go at least get your 4th they will take a 4th over a 5th everytime regardless of plant size. I assume the guys you know that can't find work with their PE tickets only have o&g experience which won't help much if they are looking for work in a commercial or residential plant as it is a very different atmosphere. There is work out there for 4 th and 3rd right now but that being said there is a lot more guys applying for each position now than before.

If I had to do it again I'd pick instrumentation/electrician. Wide variety of jobs in that field.

What class of PE are you?? Looks like the mill I'm at is hiring two more 4ths

Yes its a poor me attitude. Just because there are lots of pe's out of work does not mean there is no work and it may not be the dream job at a sagd plant but paying the bills is number one for me.

My attitude is fine, and I am correct in stating there are too many students being pumped out of the schools for the present job market. They expect to find work and many wont because they have little experience, and thats pretty crappy when they have been fed the line about companies falling over themelves to hire these guys. Those days are gone, and to get something now seems to require timing plus some luck. We have SAIT grads working with us, and it sure isnt because they wanted to leave AB for SK..like you said they have to pay the bills.

There is no poor me about it, and I guess if it seemed that way I should have typed something different. For myself I had a plan and the current situation means it most likely wont be happening for the next while, so I was thinking of exploring other options, like Instrumentation, as was mentioned. You have a good gig, and I have a job, but there are many guys I know who cant land anything, so atm PE isnt an easy go. Thats all I meant to say.

Movin' to Fort Mac...
Wife and I are empty nesters, so we have a lot of flexibility to pick up and move. Hopefully this proves to be a good place to be for the next 5 years, then I will be ready to pull out the tartan slippers, grow a pony tail and drink Bailey's in my coffee every morning.
I hope there is a ton of snow up there this winter.
