What's your favourite tire for Alberta riding conditions?

I run my stock 30 inch that my Xmr Maverick came with and they are great.

Studded now for the winter.

That's a great question ! There is so much varied terrain in Alberta , from skeg to rock to muddy clay to hard pack dirt , etc etc

So are you looking for a specific purpose tire , or a great all terrain tire ?
Then there is wear , toughness , weight , rim guard , tread depth , smoothness , size etc to be factored in as well .
So it's a lot more complicated to select the right tire as apposed to the best tire ..
I think in short it's about selecting the right tire for your machine , riding style , terrain you ride and buget of course ...
Since the evolution of sxs's , out tire choices have gotten more plentiful & a well as better quality tires generally speaking ..
In short there is a lot of good choices out there right now ...

I ride more mud/skeg than trails so I have Zilla's, used to have Outlaw 2's but too rough on rocking trails. If I rode more trails I would put on Kenda HTR's, but unfortunately they don't come in a 1" plus lug height.

For an all around tire , Zillas are great .. Not a strictly rock / gravel tire , but an awesome all around tire .

Sedona ripsaws. Good all around tire, dig well and clean out ok in mud, and do well on dry trails. 6 ply, deep tread and tougher than shark $hit. Heavy though.

I ran STI Black Diamond XTR's for a bit. They are a great looking tire that I recommend if you do a lot of trail riding, especially at high speeds as they handle unreal. What I didn't like about these tires is they will dig straight down in anything loose like snow or sand and to get these things to handle like a dream they need to be aired right down. You are gonna sacrifice ground clearance for handling which isn't the end of the world but they run small to begin with, about 1.5" when running low pressure, which I didn't like. I had purchased 26's and they ended up being a hair smaller than the stock 25's. The XTR's clean out and sling mud well, sharp rocks and slippery logs / roots is where these things really shine. I ended up with 28" zillas and find myself swapping back and forth depending on the terrain I am going to be riding just because of how well they handle the trails.

I've been very happy with Zillas. They perform pretty well in the mud and are still decent in most other types of terrain. They're super light too, so even a stock Grizzly can turn a set of 28's pretty easily.

That said, I'm enjoyng more and more of the alpine trails these days and will probably say bye to agressive mud tread and go with something better suited to hard pack trail and rock.

I hear you on the alpine trail thing. That's where I'm at as well. I'm torn between the Zillas and Bighorns or the Blackwater Evos

I ride in the mountains a lot and find Bighorns work well for this type of terrain these are an older design but seem to work good for where I ride.

Have 30 inch mudder in laws on , they seem ok , work well in wet mucky stuff , have to be careful not to much throttle In Muskeg . Little bumpy at low speeds but smooth out quick

Well, i have been running Bighorn orginals since 2007. I had them on my 07 and now with my 2010 i have one set for summer and one set studded for winter on stock beadlock rims. Total km driven on both machines is over 21,100 km. I have gone thru a few sets of bighorns in that time period.

I still say 26" mud bugs....I have over 3000 km on my current set only 1/8 worn off....they are only that hard of rubber on the 26" though even guys working at Rapid say this....gunna see about longevity on the 27 inch next....I quad Alberta and BC and winter,summer.....I trust a tread pattern that's been used on tractors over a hundred years.

Just wondering on side slopes. A friend ran mud bugs and on a side slope it did not work well.

I'm not a big fan of side hilling on any tire! They do curve the tread a bit, but yeah maybe not best for side hilling.

The old Bearclaws are a great all around tire. Was going to wait till I wore them down to switch to zillas but the claws never seemed to wear! Zillas are much better in the mud though, and light enough that my old 500 can turn a 27 without issues.
