Hey guys wondering what the best kind of sled to get for my kids so they can start learning to ride. They are 8 and 6 years old. I have seen the mini z and those types but are they worth the bother if I have to sell it right away because they out grow it. Please give me your uum knowledge on the subject.::D

I hear Doo is coming out with a new 1000xp. They shouldn`t out grow that one for awhile, lol. Seriously...I wanted to get my kid a mini sled too but they don`t lose value. A new one is about $3000 and a one year old is $2500+. So if you did buy it and they out grew it in a year I don`t think you would loose much on the resale.

for the 8 year old to start of maybe a ski-doo 300cc freestyle, normal sized sled maybe a bit smaller, only 300cc tho, and for the 6 year old maybe a mini-z

If you could find an old Elan in decent shape, that would be perfect for them.
I totally agree. when my boys want something bigger than the mini z, they're going to have to put time in on the old '79 Citations before they get a modern sled. I think the balance and skill learned from riding with a narrow ski stance and poorly suspended snowmobile will be invaluable. and they are way light, Elans are great sleds.

We bought a z120 in 2000 and we put a performance kit into it and all 3 of our boys rode it daily and it went through many MANY tanks of feul. We could sell it today for almost what we paid. Our 7 yo is riding an older 340 and he loves it. I agree about that learning to ride and control bit that I think it was teeroy said. Our 9 yo is riding on most days an older 440 and our 11yo is riding a OLD 292. Lots of people have great old machines just sitting unused and forgotten in their shops/old bins/yards ect..good luck!! I will even keep my ears open for ya :)

The mini 120's are a great platform for the little guys and girls to get the feel and riding experience on a snowmobile which will teach them how to ride and get the basics down early :) It is a must to eliminate the governor on these sleds from day one as they are dreadfully slow in stock form. My boys have all riden z120's and have a pile of great memories!

The next sled might be a Freestyle or an older z440, we'll see. My oldest wants the freestyle... it would be great for him but still a bit too much cash when considering a late 90's used sled??

My kids started with a yamaha snow scoot, they are hard to find but are a great sled, just sold ours this year, bought the kids a backcountry freestyle 550 fan, went to clemina twice jetted it and it was a blast for the kids.

the nytro is a 1000, and the phazer mtn lite is 500, for how heavy it is, its masks it really well, i rode one all last winter, there alot of fun, only 80hp, i think 100 would be better

Ya i dont know about the 80hp though mine has 120hp and he rides it fine.
Do you have an idea of how much power it would have with a turbo?

I rode a 500 fan Summit in the Rockies. I think they were only made in 01-02. It was the S-chassis and it wasn't bad considering I wiegh 200lb. Any of the fans with a 136 should work fine, and they're so light.

a turbo'd phazer mtn lite has 150hp, although im pretty sure you can get smaller turbo's for like 120-130, or you could try the nytro it has 130hp, but 500 more cc, the phazer is $8-9,000.00 brand new and the nytro is around 10-12,000.00

A buddy took his 12 yr old to the hills on a RMK 500 or 550 with a 136X1.75" and he had no problems at all. Kids generally weigh so little that any 136" with a decent 1.5"-1.75" lug will haul them around, heck, there are still adults that go to the hills with short tracks.
