Just checking before I get in trouble

I was suppose to go riding this weekend but I am fighting off what is left of a wicked flu. I really want to ride my sled if only for an hour though. I have seen tons of tracks on various portions of roads in/around Edmonton like off the Henday. I have never seen a sled though. Is it illegal to ride in the big open areas around off and on ramps?

Maybe this is just a dumb idea. I think by Sunday though I will be done with this flu.

perhaps you could drive the extra fifteen minutes and travel to ride the ditches of Leduc county where it is legal if you adhere to their basic conditions...there is at least some snow now thanks to yesterday's precipitation

wowzers glad I asked. Back home I could fire em up at home and take off there for the hills. maybe I will head west a bit and try to find some wide open area or just wait till next weekend.

I see one whole side of the henday all tracked up just before you get to windemere. guy must have had guts or no brains.

As someone born and raised in the city, one of the benefits of living outside of Edmonton is being able to blast around with your sled/quad/sXs/dirtbike right from your house and nobody cares !!!

To the OP....
Provincial laws "basically" state to not ride the ditches of ANY roadway. Most county's (except for the stupid chitty one I live in) choose to not enforce this law as long as you stay away from major roadways. And for the love of Pete..... STAY AWAY FROM OFF RAMPS/CLOVER LEAFS/OVERPASSES.

my acreage is 22 kms south west of Barrhead, I used to try to ride to my gas station in town, we lved along 654 which is aganist county law to ride it. once I got to 18 north. it was OK. as far as I know, riding a ditch beside a triple digit highway is illegal,,but a double digit is OK. in Barrhead County, all the Countys have different laws. Now that moved back to Whitecourt we can ride from home to the trails.,but no ATVs allowed on the snowmobile trails, from Dec 1 to March 31 then NO ATVS allowed in town all summer.

Here's the actual provincial law...

Prohibited Operation: An off-highway vehicle may not be operated on any highway, road or ditch unless permission has been expressly granted. In the case of a provincial highway, the Minister may by “order” or “permit” authorize such vehicles along any portion of a highway (Traffic Safety Act, Section 120(4)(a)(i) & (ii)). In the case of a municipality, the council of a municipality may, through bylaw, authorize such vehicles along any portion of a highway (Traffic Safety Act, Section 120(4)(b)).
Note: Definition of “highway” includes the ditches alongside the roadway.

Highway – “highway” means any thoroughfare, street, road, trail, avenue, parkway, driveway, viaduct, lane, alley, square, bridge, causeway, trestleway or other place or any part of any of them, whether publicly or privately owned, that the public is ordinarily entitled or permitted to use for the passage or parking of vehicles and includes:
i.
A sidewalk, including a boulevard adjacent to the sidewalk
ii.
If a ditch lies adjacent to and parallel with the roadway, the ditch, and
iii.
If a highway right of way is contained between fences or between a fence and one side of the roadway, all the land between the fences, or all the land between the fence and the edge of the roadway as the case may be, but does not include a place declared by regulation not to be a highway.

I wouldn't venture into town to fill the sled up, but I don't think anyone would really care. the farmers always drive their tractors to the esso to fill up so I don't think it is any different, but the 411 would have a different opinion.

I think if you are not ignorant blasting back and forth over major hiways and overpasses ( as extreme has mentioned) you won't have a problem.
