My understanding is cutting the quills is a myth, have helped two people pull quills before and clipping the ends didn't seem to make a difference at all

Maybe it is. It is supposed to let some air out so the swelling can go down. It is a painful process no matter how those stickies are removed.
The funny thing is, those 2 will go after another one. They don't seem to learn.
