Is the 2012 timbersled kit too old to be worth while?

Hi all, looking to pull the trigger on a snow bike. I want to purchase a turn key bike. I have found a couple with 2012 timbersled kits that are in my price range. It looks like the ski is a big upgrade but I also see that they have significantly changed the skid geometry. Can I retro fit these changes?

I do not need the latest and greatest. I just want to have something that is reliable and works well. Does the 2012 fit the bill?

Be careful my friend. These bike builds can get carried away in a hurry. You may not think you need the latest and greatest but some of the cases that I've seen with starter kits with intentions to upgrade the guys end up spending a tonne of extra money adding piece by piece rather than capitalizing on the loss of someone elses complete and updated build. If you can resist buying all the spendy extras and just leave the bike alone these older kits can be a great way to get out there but if your a little bit impulsive and a tinkerer the retail bills can add up quick. Just food for thought. Unfortunately I have no personal input on the 2012 for you.

Thanks for the reply. The little things do add up quickly! That's why i want to purchase a completed bike. I just want to understand if there were any years to stay away from.

There is a bearing up grade kit witch is important to have done, before Polaris bought them you could buy the complete kit, now you have to buy all the pieces, I run a 2014 KTM 500 XCW with TS long track that I'm thinking about selling PM me if you want more info, it's has upgraded foot pegs, air filter, heated grips bark buster, raised bars, heavier springs in forks. Ya it gets pricey as you build one

If you get a 2012 - just make sure they did the double bearing upgrade. Most guys did - but make sure.

Then tighten bolts, grease, fuel bike and apply throttle. That easy.

Check the Timbersled Mtn Snowbikers Page on Facebook. A guy in Cranbook has a 2013 KTM 450sx-f and a 16 ST kit for $10,500 and fully built. Smokin deal

Thanks for the advice. Just finishing up grease and bolt tightness checks. The skid is nicly built. It has the double bushings, tilted a arm. The big problem is that the only way to start it when cold is to put a litttle gas in the throttle body. Need to figure that out. Can not wait to take it to the mountains next weekend!

Heading to blue river with three sleds and the bike. Let me get a couple of days on it to get it sorted and then I would love to come out with you. I live in the park as well so pretty close. I was driving it around my yard. What a blast! The 570 runs like a dream. Just need to get the cold start sorted. Dropped it off at cycle works to get them to adjust valves and go over the FI system. Fingers crossed.

Your never going to look back or should I say you will because in most situations the sleds are not going to be able to follow you around. LOL. Be nice to them cause they are still your buds. Set up looks pretty nice all around. Can you easily pour gas into the throttle body with fuel injection. I thought it was easy to flood them that way, not sure though. 570 should have lots of power for ya. You will still end up spending more on creature comforts but if you buy a sled its the same deal. Have a blast and tell us what you think when your back from trip.

Ya don't run solo with a bike cause you will have tendencies to go somewhere that no one else but a biker will just happen to come by and lend a hand. We were playing in some trees on weekend and took a bit to find each other once. 2 way Radio makes all the difference.

Just back from 3 days at chatter creek. I took my sled and snow bike. Chatter is pretty open so good place to get the hang of the bike. The bike runs like a top. The torque of the 570 makes this bike work extremely well. It was not long my berfor I was lower down and slicing through the trees. With the short track it was a little dicy on icy decents. I thought I could get away with the stock fork springs but was bottoming out alot and needed to ride cautiously to avoid slamming my chin on the light bar. Good summer project. Really looking forward to next year. I will not be putting many miles on the free ride! Here are some pictures. IMG_0012.jpg IMG_0015.jpg IMG_0042.jpg

They are a blast !
Change out your fork springs, makes a world old difference.
Stock springs are usually around .48 kg. I put in some .62 kg springs from Cannon Racecraft, and trail, alpine, tree
riding was much improved. I see the Bergs are on the Race-tech site as well .
Best $160 you can put in a snowbike. Will have to change back though, when the wheels go back on.
It's quite firm !

I left my stiffer springs in mine last summer and had no problems with it. I'm not what you'd call an aggresive dirt rider though.

Will give it a try, the KYB open cartridge forks are easy for spring swaps, if the forearms get hammered on the trails :d
