Is it this challenging to find employees elsewhere?

Actually tried to hire this guy. I had to meet him with a resume like this.

that's a better resume than some youngsters out there..........

I used to work for an AV company, and the general manager there really watched for a couple of company names on resumes for entry level roles I never would have thought of, they were Walmart and McDonald's and I questioned him about it, he said that both companies have strong training in customer services and focus on that, and that's what he wanted for his technicians dealing with customers.

Having a kid that just recently graduated from high school this looks a resume he would have done on his own. Our school system is not teaching our kids what they need to be prepared after school. It is so full of socialism, they don`t care if they have any skills to succeed. I hope this kid works out for you, after reading over his resume it sounds like he enjoys fixing things and has a variety of experience. I really liked the driving part, there are so may employers saying in their ads that they "must have drivers licence and reliable transportation".

Here is my experience: As a farm kid that can operate anything with wheels or tracks, a red seal journeyman mechanic that has also worked in management, plus 30 ish years in the oil and gas industry, I cannot buy a job, employers want young people that spend most of their time on social media, and avoid manual labor like the plague, for a minimal amount of $$$. So here I am in my 50’s, working as a derrickhand…which I did 20 years ago. HR departments are a big part of the problem, along with computer based software to weed out the older, experienced hands….

I applied for 4 different jobs never even got a reply. Maybe they filled the positions internally and just posted because they had to. I’m not sure. I agree with what Firstdoo said. Seems everyone is hiring but no one is hiring. Where did all the airport workers go? Or workers in the hospitality industry go? Do they all work at Amazon now? I know a few guys around here trying to hire and they get a lot of I don’t want to work 40hrs a week I’m not working weekends or I’m not working for less than 100k/year. Some of them only got 4 resumes total. It doesn’t add up to me. Not sure how people are paying their bills if they aren’t working. It sure is a weird time out there right now. I think we are in for a major recession and a lot of bankruptcies.
There are a ton of "baby boomers" retiring, I believe they are the vast majority of generations, leaving many positions open. There are tons of positions open in the healthcare and hospitality industries because of this, and not much training over the past few years, schools had way less graduates in these fields.

I agree, I hired my kids buddy as a labourer for the summer. He's a year out of highschool and was asking how he can get loan for a truck and how does credit work.
Schools are not teaching kids basic life skills like finances and obviously some parents are not either.

We train them on alot of customer service and ability to work in different areas of buisness to get experience with different tasks and also taking on challenges for those looking to advance here to build there people skills and have a good understanding of the job.

They then have some life experience to use else where when they move on to there career they went to school for in alot of cases

Most Gen Z are looking for flexible work hours, being challenged with tasks, recognition for job done, good training,

University graduates head out looking for work with a liberal arts degree which qualifies them to take orders at a drive thru or….. be a politician. The majority will end up joining up with the flavour of the day protest group, blocking bridges, railroads and logging sites

I gave up trying to hire anyone and only take on as much work as I can do. Sometimes it's frustrating doing the grunt work or a saturday if something has to get done, but overall it's a lot less stress. It's a lot of trust to let someone run equipment and only see them operating for like a day before leaving them on their own which is the only way I could do it, if I could find someone good I could easily pay them $40/hr but try to find someone with hoe and mini hoe experience in residential construction who is competent enough to leave alone, virtually impossible. There's a reason why I can go do a job myself in less time then the bigger companies can and they will have 2-3 guys. Every time I tried it was all oilfield operators. You might know how to run a hoe, but it's a totally different game, if you're not use to working in very tight areas and around utilities you'll be out of business very fast. Also not saying all, but it also generally means they treat equipment like chit, which is something I will not tolerate.

In general I think everyone is having a tough time finding anyone to do anything labor related. My brother has 4 guys who've been with him for probably 4 years. Every single one has left at some point and came back very fast. One guy left for 2 weeks and worked at two competitors, and a year prior left too. But every single one came back, and at least for a bit was humbled at how good they have it. No forced weekends, paid proper overtime, pretty good benefits, tons of flexibility on work days. One of them misses pretty much 1 day a week and still has a job.

But finding the laborer's is the worst. He always has ads up even when he doesn't need guys because they turn over so fast. Even though the work has got so much softer in the last 10 years, but you have no choice because people won't do most grunt work now.

No he was in his early 20’s. He was living in Viking and didn’t want to commute to Calmar. I tried my best to get him. Within 5 minutes of talking to him I knew he had what it takes. Resumes are a joke, you can’t tell anything about a person by what is written down.

That is true. A good B.S.er can make a good looking resume

I've been looking for a few engineering/tech type of people,

Sounds similar to staff we hire. Grew from 2-10 in last year virtually all via recommendations or connections from existing staff. Great people know great people, and great people want to work with other great people

bank pays the tellers 18 an hour. They always seem so sad and depressed when I'm there. I tell some of them I can pay them more to be my butler lololol jk

Appreciate the feedback - makes me feel a bit better that what I'm seeing isn't unique
My company is in the same city’s job market as you. We are looking for a different skill set than you are but we have definitely had to lower our standard in what we look for in people. Turn over is higher then we are used to and we are trying to grow our labor by an additional 40%.
Defiantly a challenging labor market if you are hiring.
