Well I have worked all over the world over the last 13 years and have seen some really great places, and some really not so great places. I just flew into to northern Iraq today local time is 10 hours ahead of Alberta. The first thing I have notice is how nice the people are thus far, more then willing to help, and offer up smiles regularly. Now with this being the north it is primarily a Christen society, which helps it giving an outsider a safe feeling.
Tomorrow I will be heading out to a drilling rig for a visit via armed escort(should be interesting). This trip will be short lived will be flying back to Alberta on Friday. The next time I come into Iraq I will be here for a full month..or more..:d. I will be getting some pictures over the next few days and I will be sure to post them on here as opportunity allows it.
Happy New Years S&M!

I hope the title of this thread holds true tomorrow...got kevlar!..lol

What is it you're doing at the drilling rig?

Going out to the rig to get pictures and measurements so that we send what we need with the equipment..tie in points and such. This is for Manage Pressure Drilling.:d

Well finally back to Erbill the capitol of Kurdistan(Northern Iraq). The rig visit went well, as did the meeting today with all companies involved. Its kind of cool seeing the guard outpost spread out around location giving the rig a good 1km buffer zone!..and the Bunkers are a nice touch as well!..Really not sure what to think of the whole thing yet, time will tell. Anyways here are a few pictures I have taken thus far. 1. Me and my guards 2. Driving out to rig site 3. Rig getting ready to stand the derrick. 4. Erbil

the only reason you require armed guards is because of that hat :d

& not cause someone wants to steal it.

I've done quite a bit of MPD and UBD all over the place. Have fun and stay safe, good luck with the Egyptian crew/Chinese rig combo, been there done that.

when you back..... You need to get into town here for a beer or two;) ...... I guess the economy there has really picked up, kinda like a young kuwait, now?

Yeah your right Ric, the north is booming and doing great, things are safe in the cities, and a lot of new busy and buildings are being built. The risk happens to and from the rig site when the Villagers that aren't getting their share of the pie, try taking it in no so nice ways. Or if you have a local hire and he needs to be laid off well at times he comes back with his fellow villages and the problems a raise. Looks like I will be back to Iraq in 3 weeks.
Anyway I am flying out in 12 hours then basically jumping on the sled where ever the snow is good! First trip of the year..man work makes the sled season far to short!

When I worked in the field regularly as a Drilling Foreman I drilled UBD wells for Northrock in Alberta, CNRL and Encana in BC, Intragaz in Quebec, Pemex in Mexico, Simray Production in Wyoming just to name just a few. I was a drilling manager for a couple of years for Rally Energy, we operated a field in Eastern Egypt. I had 4 rigs drilling at one time, one of them was Chinese owned but Egyptian crewed and the other three were Egyptian owned and crewed.
