Inreach or Spot X

An Inreach or Spot X are far more reliable than a Sat Phone. A Spot or Inreach only need a signal for a few seconds to get a message out, Sat Phones need a good signal the entire duration of a call. If you don't have a signal an Inreach or Spot X keep trying to send until they get a signal. Plus they also send your location to S&R in the event of an emergency. How many people when calling for help on a Sat Phone know their exact location? Especially if they are calling because they are lost. A Sat Phone requires a significant amount of user intervention to get the correct help to the right location, if I'm in trouble all I have to do is push the SOS button on my Inreach and someone will find me.

These devices are proven pieces of technology and many people owe their lives to them, and to say otherwise is merely the opinion of someone to ignorant to use one.

True, but if you know what you are doing nothing is faster than a Sat phone and credit card.

SPOT/Inreach is only gonna dispatch SAR and they don't dispatch the heli unless they have exhausted all other less expensive options.

PS, don't dial 911 on a SAT phone, it is useless. Local RCMP # or a heli company is best.

-I’ve had my sat phone for 4years now and battery is still good with no probs

-I call the wife at lunch to tell her it’s a sick day all the time /call someone who cares lol

-call the guyz that didn’t come that trip to tell them it was deeepest day of the year lol

-the very odd time I have to wait 3 min for signal

-clouds or puking Snow White outs it works np

-use ur gps if u really need a location

-ur new sled was to much money but u still bought it and u love it .same goes for a sat phone

-it looks good and the makes the new guy feel safe so u can drag him in to the shxt with no ? On the way Lol

Helicopters are only good if they can get to you in the first place, where we ride its borderline if a helicopter has the range to get to you anyway.

With 2 way communication on inreach or spot x you can also make rescuers aware of your situation and they can then chose to use other tools of rescue as the situation requires.

If you have a high enough limit on your credit card they will get to you.

I highly recommend Arrow Helicopters in Revelstoke. He flew in a complete Blizzard to come get us once, cost 6k but it was worth it. (Not Boulder lol)

First thing the RCMP/SAR ask is how bad are you hurt and can you spend the night.....

Most answers lead to spending the night.

Kakwa, Kakwa lake is 165km from the Airport in Grande Prairie (330km round trip). Range on a Bell 212 is 439 km, that gives the pilot the equivalent of 109km of fuel to find you, land, get your @ss in the helicopter and then take back off, and that's assuming someone already hauled you in to the lake from whatever riding area you were in. Most places only get further from GP. There have been a few instances where STARS has refused to pickup individuals with serious injuries out there, and I don't blame them, why risk a multi-million dollar machine and the lives of the 4 crew on a mission who's success can't be guaranteed.

My dad was out riding a few years ago and sh*t did not go as planned that day. A old fellow broke his femur. they had a spot and a sat phone. The wiener with the spot was so boned up to use it he convinced the guys just to use that. Well 4 hours later they finally got a chopper to the guy. That’s a long time to lay in the snow. With spot there’s To many channels to get to the same out come as just calling emergency Services directly. This year I’ll be buying a sat phone it will be a Iridium as the others just don’t have the networking to keep from dropping calls. If in a life or possible death situation I’ll pay for the chopper right now over possible having to wait for the next day.

Been right in town at the store in trout lake and couldn't get out on a sat phone. So I dunno. My thing is I've seen them not work and that's why I don't really trust it.

can anyone tell me that uses a Spot X if their contacts can see where they are located in a easy way off their cell phones when they send a message that says something like "leaving the truck now"??? Or I'm on the way home?

You can send a preset canned message.

Or you can type out your own on the blackberry keyboard.

Was out with a buddy last week with his inreach and he had to send a custom message and it is very tedious as it uses the old T9 word tech, from the old cell phones.

Really bad in an emergency situation imo.

You betcha.

Each text message you send out has the coordinates embedded.
If the person on the other end has a cell phone they can just click on them and they will display on your map app of choice.

Or you can take it a step further and they can track you in real time.

It's really a slick unit.

Local heli company has an on call cell phone? Add that to the phone book.
Keyboard makes it much easier to relay details.

Unfortunately you can't text 911 in Canada yet, but that functionality is coming.

Cheaper unit.
Cheaper plans.
Better Safety device.
But does lack a full blown GPS.

Try that during -20C in a white out.
And buddy has a broken leg.
