Importing Older Vehicles from the US

Anyone here have experience bringing older vehicles across the border from the US. I understand the process for newer stuff, but not sure if the older vehicles are regulated. Is it just show up at the border with the vehicle on a trailer with a bill of sale and pay the tax man?

Go to the RIV website. It lists the vehicles that are and aren’t admissible. If I remember correctly there’s a section for antiques that might apply depending on the age of the stuff that you’re wanting to bring back.

I've done it a few times. Its really easy. You have to fill out a form, ( its been a few years now ) and basically "export" the vehicle from the states, so you have to let the states know you're taking a vehicle, they'll export the vehicle ( it used to take 36 hours to process ) you'll get the title stamped as exported- then hit the canadian border with the bill of sale, and you'll pay your taxes / ac fee. and they'll link up you up digitally for the RIV inspections. They'll handle all the paperwork. If your vehicle is over 15 years old there are a bunch of standards it doesn't need to meet.

from what ive read on the RIV website (thank you Cdnfireman) It says that for motorcycles they need to get an inspection to be cleared...and its done at Canadian Tire :confused: Crappy Tire is gonna do an inspection on a Harley...hmmm I have been looking at buying a Bagger and bringing it back. Wonder how the hassle is with custom bikes.

Anything custom i would watch out. I've heard some crazy stories about modified vehicles, have to be un modified, inspected, then re-modded if the owner chooses to do so. That may have been worth it when the dollar was closer to par, but definitely not now.

No lift kits and no kit cars that I know and I would NEVER buy a car from the states way too much junk down there as I know from a last Barrett Jackson car I got ask around see how many people got junk from Barrett Jackson

Well that puts a wrench in my plans. A custom Road Glide bagger here around 2012-2013 is $40,000+ Seen some in the states going for $18-20 US I have champagne taste on a beer budget...

Thanks for the info. That's exactly what I was looking for. I've been through the Canadian gov. web sites & RIV site over and over, but wanted to hear from someone that has experience.
The stuff I'm after is all older than 15 years, and not modified (yet), so that simplifies it some.

Nice, raked and looks like 23" front...its what im looking for. What about the price tag...I doubt that is a 20g bike haha

Just checked that bike out. $55g's for a 2012 ya no thanks. Nice bike but not for that kinda coin. That's why i want to buy down south. You can get some wicked customs for half the price of what that bike is worth. Sad part is the owner probably has that much into it just in parts. Canadian dollar need to get going $$$

Bought a used (it was actually brand new - US Harley dealers can't sell new into Canada so they registered it to a salesman and then sold it to me - don't freak out, I had tried to buy the same bike in Alberta but each dealer was only allocated 1or 2 and I lost out on their draw of those who put down a deposit) CVO Harley in Texas which was essentially the last one in North America. Sounds like you know the paperwork and process part. But now to your question, the Canadian Tire I went to sent an apprentice outside, he verified the VIN, had me activate all of the lights and sound the horn. He looked at absolutely nothing else and simply went back inside to sign the form. For my $175 I was there less than 10 minutes, which included waiting to speak to the service writer and paying the piper at the end.

i see a small light at the end of this tunnel... thanks for the info. I have to wait till March or April to have my finances in order. One tiny question....was your Harley bone stock or have any stage 1 or 2 on it?

Was a stock Anniversry Screamin' Eagle at the time - put a Stage 1 on it later.

This is 100% accurate I was told to have my paperwork at the border 36 hours before I cross, I paid to have mine shipped from grass valley California was $1900 to Edmonton. To the guys looking at modded bikes if you remove the front forks or the engine you can declare it as a parts and re-certify once you get home.

It's actually 72 hr notice not 36 hr
