Hey everyone. I was browsing the stolen snomobile section, and read where one poor fellow lost his 2010 Dodge, and a Summit X. I got to thinking about how the buggers got away with it, as the Dodge has a SKIM key, and it will not run without it. This is true, UNLESS IT WAS EQUIPPED WITH A REMOTE STARTER! The factory "chip" keys that are used on most new vehicles today have to be bypassed to install a remote starter, and I'm betting thieves are just looking for the telltale antenna on the inside of the windshield. Food for thought from an old mechanic - perhaps any Ford or GM guys can add their 2 cents if it applies to the GM & Fords.

rusty is correct but you have a good point about the remote starts. Some (older ones) had to have a chipped key left in the vehicle to fool the transponder. If the installer is smart they cut off the part that goes in the tumblers but if not there's a key for them to start. If it's just the chipped part all he would have to do is find the box and remove the entire box (or just the key from inside) and hold it close to the key tumbler while they start it (hotwire/broken ignition etc). Even with the programmable transponders that don't retain a key it could be done, apply 12volts (or a ground depending on design) to the immobilizer bypass and it sends the chip info to the transponder to say good to start.

Bottom line, if a thief wants it he'll get it. If he can't drive it away he can always hook it up to a tow truck. It should be legal to have your door handles wired to 110 volts.

You are correct that Dodge has a factory installed remote starter, but it is an option unless you are driving the higher end trucks. On ST and SLT's it is was an option, or part of an option group.
My purpose of posting was to perhaps reconsider before installing an aftermarket starter on your vehicle if it bypasses the anti-theft module - I know Doge has used skim keys since 2004, and not everyone owns a 2010 or newer tow rig. Also putting it out there to the Ford and GM owners to check before installing.
But yes, if someone wants your rig bad enough, they will likely get it - no sense making it easier for them.

thats def a valid point oneoldfart. I put an aftermarket starter in my 09 gmc but also ensured I got the system with the alarm. My 04 gmc also had an aftermarket starter but without alarm, and it did not disable the factory alarm... but if the guys did research there is also ways to put remote starter systems (alarm active or not) into a bypass mode. stops the alarm and allows you to fire up and drive as if the system didnt exist.

My command start has a built in alarm in it. Unless u have the key fob and unlock the doors with it , it won't crank at all.

So I wouldn't say all aftermarket starters are bad.

Only thing is if the batterys die or loose the fob Ur screwed

oh really? which starter do you have tex? My titan starter if you know how to hit buttons right u can put into bypass (which i didnt know). I had left w my keys, boyfriend took spare keys which had dead remote, opened door w key and she went off like circus. disconnected the batteries to make it stop alarming and when he called titan they explained to him how to put the system in bypass mode so he could drive the truck... Not sure if hot starting or anything otherwise would work or not at that point..

Been there done that also don't leave the window down and reach in to unlock or to pull the inside door handle the horn freaks out also

Valid point!! They are a lot harder to steel idling away with the keys in them

It's a auto start ( not close to the keys so I can't look )

Also wanted to clarify that with the key in the ignition and u try to crank there is nothing.
Unless u hold the unlock button on the fob.

I'm sure it has to do with the command starter programing and not the truck.

I put command start in my 03 gmc if doors are locked with fob you can not start it again unless you unlock doors first with fob you can use key to unlock doors or leave window open and you cant start truck had tec put in a dead man switch that is activaded with fob does not allow power to starter now there is a hidden dead man switch you hold and can start it with out fob had different friends try to start and they couldn't but there not theifs

Maybe not laziness....comfort and convenience, I had RS on one truck....it was nice but, in the back of my mind I never trusted it....

Most security bypass modules only activate and bypass the factory security system when you start the vehicle with the key fob. This way the factory security system is still intact. They older ford vehicles with the transponder in the key needed to have a key wired under the dash.

You are correct. The key word is MOST. I have installed some remote starters that require a skim key (on dodges). Bottom line is do your research and homework prior to installing a remote starter on your vehicle, and ask the right questions. They are convienent, yes, but I don't have one on my tow rig, although my wife has one on her new Ford pickup. I have to sweep the truck off anyway, so I may as well walk outside and start it. If the thief wants it then, he's gonna have to deal my "personal" security system, which will result in black eyes and a broken nose... I hope one day that alarm systems consist of a spring loaded boxing glove or a bat to tune in the would be thief.

now that is something everyone needs until the friggin' system starts taking a few fingers or a hand or an arm related to the value of what one steals. Friggin' judges with their compassionate sentences
