I need dog advise please my dog may need an expensive operation : (

So im in situation with my newly adopted english bulldog we got him free from a breeder his wife was unfortunately ill with cancer. So he could not cope with the 10 dogs he had so had to adopt some when i picked him up i was told he had dry eye and that with the eye drops supplied it should clear up in a week. That sounded fine as he is a breeder and has shown his dogs but after a week it had not cleared up so took him to our local vet who said his eye was infected and gave us some cream to treat it. It did not get better so took him back to the vet and she was not happy with the eye and looked into the eye with a light. And he might be loosing his sight in that eye so now he is booked in with an eye specialist for tuesday im really not happy with this breeder i could say what i feel but i will not. Anyway if he needs an operation at the moment i just cant afford it what am i going to do my wife and boy loves this guy i do to. But if he needs things done that may cost a lot of money we cant do it at this time. Can anyone give me some advise please we all love this new member of our family but i feel lied to by this guy if i knew this i would not of got the dog that needs a lot of money spent on him thank you john.

See of you can go on a payment plan for the surgery if needed or try and fundraise. People have a soft spot for animals and often are willing to help out once brought to their attention. IMO once you take on an animal your responsible to do everything u can for their needs.

talk to the local dog rescue in your area, sometimes they can help lower costs thru their organization, I do home checking for several pitbull rescues when people from my area apply for their dogs and I know they have helped others out before, contact hugabull they generally stick to bully breeds and I'm sure they will be helpful, better to see the current owner keep their friend than have the dog end up rescued and re homed

A payment plan is a great option, fundraise (had a lady at work who sold chocolates to support her dogs payments and it went awesome for her), also try and get a second opinion or call around to different vets asking how much they would charge for that particular procedure, also, I know vets are cheaper in the US... may be an option to take your lil pup there? I agree, once you take on the responsibility of a pet it is your duty to do everything you can in order to save the lil guy!

For years they have bred these dogs to be as short fat and compact as possible, with no concern to the adverse heath effects to the dog. There has been considerable talk in the breeding comunity over the past couple of yrs about discontinuing the breed all together. I doubt that will ever happen.
Bull dogs are a huge responsibility, and do not come cheap. Hind sight being 20/20 you really should have researched the breed a little better. I say that only because I was toght the very same lesson about 6 yrs ago, when we got Otis, our english bull. I research the breed, and the eventual breeder for a solid 2 yrs, and thought I knew, and was prepared for everything......this was not so.

Sorry to hear about your luck John, it's heart breaking. The only advice I could give you, is go to the local SPCA and tell them of your situation. Go IN PERSON. Let them know that you are left with no choice other than to give the dog up, as you can not afford his care. Those people have huge hearts, and you might get lucky........they will not want you to give the dog up for adoption.

The thing is we researched the breed my friend has two a 3 year old and a 10 year old so he has been a great help with advise so we knew all the problems they get. We were aware that they are number one breed for problems any dog that can only be born though c section is just not a natural good breed pet insurance will cover him for new problems. But this is classed as an on going problem so it will not cover it i just feel let down and lied to buy this breeder i just hope he did not know the extent of the problem and wanted to get rid of him. We want to keep him and will not just give him away we are here for the long haul he has not had a great start to his lfe already we will do the best we can. Thank you all for your advice lets just see what the guy says on tuesday and go from there if there is an operation needed we will just see if we can sort out a payment plan.

Oh i know you didnt thats cool just thought i would explain that i did not rush into getting a breed of dog that was prone to problems thank you for your advise.

hey john dont take this the wrong way but i work with with animals everyday and vets constently.. do not let the vets talk you into spending thousands of dollars on test and surgerys just to come back in year and tell you to put him down ... most vets not all but most are there to line their own pockets .. so do your research and dont let the vets take you for a ride cuz they will i see it everyday ... but anyways best of luck with your pooch !!

I was thinking this also... I know it sounds terrible, but if it is the difference between food in your family's mouth or an expensive operation for a dog who comes with a litany of known potential medical troubles, then the answer may be blindness in one eye... I think you have your hands full, John S. and you may find that this is just the first of many health problems that the pet insurance won't cover. In my experience with my golden retriever, they are pretty picky, especially in over-bred dog breeds where you basically asked to have the problems and resulting expense just by buying an animal with known issues. You may be better off to surrender the dog to another willing family and try to find a dog/breed with less issues. Sounds harsh, I know...

Unfortunatly................with wanting to be a pet owner..............it involves also paying for care when it's needed it you truly love your animal. And I guess that's why I have an indoor cat................never have to go to the vet !!!! Shots and that's it. Most Vets will let you make some sort of payment arrangements. i have a customer who has a dog and for some reason they had to remove an eye and this dog function pperfectly... i agree with swat maybe a cheaper alternative to what ever else vet had planned

Ya bein a responsible pet owner can be extremely overwhelming. I have countless animals and one of them i truly believe nobody or at the very least very very few would deal with and keep this pup like me and my woman have. My dobie is absolutely mentally screwed, we ve even had her on prozac! Nevr in my life would i have ever thought that id be tryin to find a solution to a problem like i have with a pet like i have with her, and same deal extremely disappointed with the breeder and his absolute lack of support or info on what the problem is,,, and this was supposed to be a reputable breeder that also charged a pretty penny fer my dog. Cones ( for months!) countless medications, vet visits, net research, EVERYTHING, and i mean everythin we ve tried and the vets still have no clue to what her neurotic problem is or how to fix it. Thousands of $$$ for real, buuut we re still tryin stuff to make her be a peaceful content dog,, not easy but i also believe wen u make the decision to get a pet its their lifetime commitment not jus whats convenient for u IMO. That bein said u sound like u do luv this pup and will do whatevers in ur power, financially as well to make sure he has a good life, so if all u can do is have him left with vision in one eye, he ll be happy that hes still around to hang out with u and ur fam, and im sure u guys will feel the same of him.

Have you tried another vet I now that some out of town vets can be cheaper and also may offer different advice. Just a thought. We walk our dogs with a couple that has a blind dog and you would never know it.

Your situation is a hard one to be in. Especially with a pet that is a real part of the family. We have a mini long hair dachshun. We had her spayed as soon as possible. We also had a little issue with her spraining her back and had to get pain medication for it. The wife had called the in town clinics and the costs involved were steep. She ended up finding a vet who worked from home in the country about 45min from our door step. He was 1/3 the cost, I ch!t you not. We've been using him ever since and Lola's 4yrs old now. It pays to shop around. Good luck with the pup.

That is the main reason I never got the kids a pet. I would never drop a a couple of grand on an animal.
