Hunter Question: what to get for a new rifle

So getting a new rifle for deer season. Just deciding which calibre. Gonna be using it for deer, elk, moose, etc.

Looking between a .30-06, a .25-06 or a .308 or whatever you suggest.

I will be reloading all my own shells so ammo price doesn't make a huge difference.

i don't know which to pick out of your three but would probably go with the 30-06, 308 not much better than a 243 and anything bigger than a deer better hope your shooting is good. or get ready to do alot of tracking. lol same with the 25-06.
i shoot a 7mm not much larger than a 270 in actual bullet size but allot more punch when it hits, and travels alot faster. i like it it is a bit big for deer but then again i never have to track anything so it works out .

Oh no my eyes are perfect I'm usually 2nd in the pack so I don't get all the dust. The little single cylinder is usually so far back we are thinking(hoping) that we lost him

I shoot a 7mm and love it. My reasons are the same as magnets.. I did a lot of research before buying the rifle just to make sure that it was going to be happy with it. I do agree it is a little big for smaller deer, but I can get away with a "bad shot" and not have to track it down as far.

I shoot a Tikka T3 Laminate Stainless Steel with a Leopould VX3 3.5x9 scope.

I've just always thought 7mm would be way to big for deer. The 7mm are quite a bit more expensive than anything else to get into arent they?

7mm savage bolt action, was a package deal with scope etc. scope was ok lasted 2 seasons, but gun is great put new scope on this season shooting 1.5" three shot groups @ 200yards. can't complain about that.
not shooting factory loads though anymore, could be out 4-6" from box to box. same brand same shell.

I like my Browning 30-06 A-bolt medallion with scope, shoots straight, deer drop fast, and can still drop moose or elk, 308 with be small for elk etc...., however still do-able. My dad's gun is 308, he has shot elk with it, but not at far range, and he has to track for a bit.

Love my winchester 30-06 have been shooting it for 24 years and it has never let me down

7mm-08 is probably the most impressive cartridge available right now in that power range that is relatively common.

I have had good results with my 270 WSM on deer, bear,and elk. Shooting reloads now it was accuarte before but even better now. still have the trustly ol 300 just in case.

I am using either a 264 win/mag or 300RUM, I have had the 300 going on 11 years and still shoots great, big enough for anything and having to track just doesn't happen. the 264 for is great for deer/sheep, and can be used on elk with an ethical shot. Good luck shopping although gun shopping is a ton of fun!

go with '06. it's a NATO round and will be around for a long time.

love my 30-06 great gun, also have a 7mm and it is great for hunting too. usually grab the 30-06 most of the time, but not always. also love my 300. even though it needs a new scope.

I always use my rem 30-06 and never let me down, but just bought a 300 win mag because I always wanted one. So now it is time to go shooting. Have fun

30-06 and 300 win mag are the top two for most common rifle if you were to only own one for all north american big game. out of your three, I would say 30-06, 165 gr for deer and 180gr for moose/elk bear.

remington 30.06 for me. great all round rifle. was using a 308 before and really liked it as well.

Can't go wrong with a 30.06. Like mentioned, it's a NATO round and can be bought in every gas station around. I also have a 25.06 that I absolutely love for wackin deer. I've put down a couple of elk with it as well but it's gotta be an ethical shot, don't like doing it. 7mm with some kick ass glass is my next purchase I think.

I shoot a Sako 7mm rem. mag. I find it a good all around gun. You can take down anything with it, hell i've even takin a few grouse with it. lol
