I've been thinking about this and I don't think the house I grew up in on the farm even had a lock. Maybe I am wrong but it was never locked if it had one.

Our front door just had a passage set, not lockable.
There is a lockset now but only for about the last 15 years.
You just knew the consequences of messing where you shouldn't - no jury was required.
