So now on top of all the other crap we're paying more for in B.C., I just heard we're gonna be paying 12% HST on our club memberships this year! Damn I hate this government!

Don't just hate the govt, hate both parties. The "others" lack the balls to do anything about it either. Time for a less controlling, smaller civil service govt.. Too much of my life is constantly being bombarded by some new govt. tax or regulation. Both the political options are not options for me. The "others" are sierra club members, these may soon be the "good ole sledding days". 40 years from now no one will know what we're all about,

I agree. We'd be better off with a minority government in B.C. Doesn't actually seem to be working that bad in Ottawa.

I got my BCSF letter in the mail yesterday too.
I would have thought that the BC Snowmobile Federation was a not for profit group, and as such would be exempt.

Belonging to the DPFN should have you exempt already, should it not? Better take that up with the Chief and Council....just saying

Ahhh........my brother from the shiny mountains to the West. Many of the Squirrel Clan travel west to hunt the white pow pow. Having the BCSF treaty card when we travel is promoted amoung our clan, as it provides funding to help protect our traditional hunting grounds.
May good fortune come to you of the Red Earth Clan

I concur great Councillor of the Squirrel Clan! But the tax you pay on the BCSF Treaty Card goes to the great white father's in the Queen's city further to the east where the rising sun sheds great light.

If I were you, I would send a smoke to Chief Thunder Cheeks and ask for his wisdom on these matters. He is a wise leader and has great powers when it comes to negotiations with the white eyes.

So shouldn't the clubs be passing on the savings to the consumers? Isn't that how the government said it was going to work? :d

Our treasurer tried to find out "how you do register a non-profit" yesterday.
After 4.5 hrs. on the phone  seriously no one could tell her how.
Poor thing.
Next thing you know they`ll be charging us source deductions on our volunteer hrs.

What if the trail pass fee had of been set at $25? It has been set at $20. That is a huge increase for smaller clubs who only charged $12.

Gov. is now saying clubs have to submit to their grooming society`s 5x a daily pass fee.
That is the entire amount of our membership fee now, this includes your bcsf membership, season trail pass and club membership.
So now it looks like we have to almost double our membership fees, wonder how that will affect the #`s.

That`s what they said, looks like it is going to work. You know, if I sold you a club membership today, the club would be in the hole.

I hear ya, I wouldn't want that, just commenting on the implementation of the HST. This was something I had never thought of, until now. What a gong show.

This is the quote I have received from Government and VARDA is a non-profit status.

"As of July 1, 2010, the HST will be applied to all fees collected at recreation sites and trails. All Agreement Holders are responsible for collecting HST applied to fees and remitting the HST to the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA). Agreement Holders are authorized to collect the HST, provided that they have registered with the CRA."

From my understanding, the HST "Exempt" limit for non-profits is 50,000gross, so for the larger clubs that sell thousands of trail passes, we are up the creek.

Curtis, does this mean that if one doesn't register with the CRA there is no need to collect the HST? Thanks, fs

I have not made any posts relating to this for the fact that I have still not seen anything on paper as of yet. Our pass fees are determined by government with info provided by the clubs, user numbers in relation to expenses etc. To make light of Powder Puffs 5x statement, the government was concerned at the low cost of "seasons passes" they would like to see clubs become more self sustaining and I believe they are going to recomend that the trail pass portion of a "membership" must be 5 x the amount of a trail pass ( ratio system similar to a ski hill).

That being said with a now 12% tax on grooming and trail fees and the commitment by MOST BC snowmobile clubs to donate a dollar per trail pass to the CAC, I belive the passses will be raised and I will confirm the exact information as soon as I receive it in writing. No point in speculating as I dont believe anyone has recieved this information on paper, but I understand our users desire to know and I have been requesting this information asap

Hope that Helps
