How does gas get into the oil sump ??

my ATV has been stalling and smoking alot. Just changed the oil and drained out about 2+ qts more than should be in it. Apparently gas has been getting into oil sump. What I drained was thin and smelled like gas. My air filter was soaked and also smelled like gas. Where do I go from here???????????HELP

I'm guessing it carbed not E.F.I so I would start with float level and or needle and seat.? Cheers

Thanks for the info......I think you may have hit it right on....a friend who has the same machine said the same thing and he will take care of it.
