Definitely notice the difference of highway maintenance from BC to AB. As soon as you hit jasper the roads go to **** coming from Blue.

Every year it gets worse. Union shop keeps the old lazy drivers employed.
You would not believe the stupidity, my buddy is a mechanic for the road contractor and everyday he has a new story.
Guys forgetting to fuel up, dumping an entire load of sand at an intersection....
I've seen the plow truck lay down gravel but not plow????

We had a crash the other day...the plow trucks were there like sh$t hawks on road kill. I'm like thanks we need three of you spreading your 3/4 road gravel on site after the vehicle is in the ditch, now how about the rest of the Hwy as they retreat back to the yard for a well deserved rest.
This is how they find out the road is bad, when there is an accident they know exactly where it is slippery and don't have to waste time and resources on the rest of the road.

Another smart move is they moved the operation from Invermere to Fairmont. Now all staff have to drive 20+ minutes to get to work and if they need any parts they need to drive to Invermere....

No sh$t pano dude, Sounds like they all get the same training.
Last year I was driving on black roads leaving Castlegar and then what appeared to be snow was a plow truck with a full load of pure salt on high spread...dumped the entire load in 5km, the road was white. That's the better part of $3000 worth of tax payers salt.
but my fav was when the grader operator ran the new $500k cat road grader into the river changing the radio station.
another one didn't realize when the cutting edge wears into the bolts you need to stop...ran it till he was half way through the frog.
like you say the stories just keep coming.

There is a valid reason why this happens. If there is an incident and the RCMP or ambulance have to attend, the RCMP can call out the local highways department to plow and sand the area "for their safety". But the kicker is if the RCMP call out the plows the local contractor can then do a direct bill for the services and gain extra income over and above their contracts.

Just follow the money ........................

The other direct effect of contracted private road maintenance is private companies to keep their costs down. One of the very best ways to do this is to pay one of the lowest rates for "skilled" labor. Drivers must have class 3 license and air tickets, so they compete with other industry for operators. Because they have the lowest pay scales, they get the worst operators. Its not that they are lazy, they are just the worst of the worst.

Remember that when you are meeting them on the highway .....................................

QE 2 between Leduc and Wetaskwin is in poor condition with multiple roll overs and vehicles in the ditch.

This started at 830 this morning and is still ongoing.

Drive careful.

Don't hit us.

We are in the fire trucks

Was out sledding a couple of day ago and it was snowing hard. 8 " new on the truck when came back. The logging road was just plowed and in great shape. Hit the paved road and it hadn't seen a plow all day.

More than one death can be attributed to crappy maintenance. It was way better when government did it but I guess cost to much. The BC government doesn't have or doesn't enforce any type of performance clauses. When there was a change in private contractors a few years ago here the new contractor showed up with a bunch of old F450 and F550 trucks. What a joke!

As stomping tom pointed out we are getting the worst of the worst for operators and cash gouging by doing the bare minimum. It's so sad that our government won't inforce proper control of the work done.
This hits every aspect of government from Icbc, the hospitals, ambulance service, school buses and the rcmp. I won't even touch on the private contractors logging trucks, fuel trucks, grayhound, shipment of food to farmers the list goes on.
our goverment thinks of saving a dollar by going private but I'm sure there spending thousand per dollar saved.
Penny rich and pound poor.

One of Our biggest expenses is not private spending .... It gov funded healthcare.
Private works fine with proper checks & balances .

Would we really want knothead for example supplying all our services ?
YIKES !!
It is a delicate balancing act , no doubt... However the way our current governments in Alberta /Ontario & federally operate for example , we would be even more broke ... ( bankrupt) in less than 6 months , the way they spend money & restrict revenue ....,!

Maybe if you took the bus a bit more we could cut down on plow costs...
