I just recently have gotten a Honda fourtrax 300 98 model and it has started to tick in the engine. i figure it's the timeing chain that has came loose. Is there an easy way to tighten it or will i need to replace it completly? the engine still is running and pulling like a honda and i know there pretty bullit proof but i want to head this issue off before it turns into something worse! suggestions??

The timing chain has an automatic tensioner on it. If it is the timing chain making the noise you can pull the tensioner and make sure it is operating correctly, but the tensioners are pretty reliable.

If you have to replace the timing chain, replace the chain guides as well.

It is common to freshen up the top end on Hondas when they start to smoke/burn oil. The timing chain then becomes to next problem.

The timing chain usually break before it starts to make noise, however I have seen noisy chains where the chain was replaced at some point but the nylon guides were not.

A noisy timing chain I would describe as a rattling noise that momentaily goes away when you burp the throttle. For a tick, the timing chain would be one of the last things I would suspect.

If you have a tick that follows the valve train RPM (half engine speed) I would check valve lash before I tore the engine out to do a timing chain.

Any idea how many miles or hours are on this unit?

What specifically make you suspects the timing chain?

My friend said that was possibly the problem and said he had seen a couple of older honda's with the same issue. I am going to check the check valve lash as suggested. It ticks while at idle speed when i burp the throttle it becomes quicker and less apparent almost to the point you cant here it. It does not smoke or anything else. Has good compression in the engine just has the tick in the engine. I have no idea the hours. I just got it for a hunting rig. I'm stationed up in Alaska and need it get in and out of the woods. Any other options?

The manual will explain the procedure well. It is an easy job. Just need a set of feeler gauges.
