Honda 450RX Snowbike Build

Hi Guys

I like to follow builds on here so i figured i would do one of my own. My brother and myself are both doing one on the same bike and will be basically build the same minus some cosmetic differences. This thread will start off slow as we are waiting for the sled show in Edmonton to purchase a lot of parts and i am still riding the bike for the time being. Hope to help some guys doing their own thing as well as get some tips as we dive in. Had the option to pay $500 to get it installed, but i like to do things on my own and understand how they work so i can have a better chance to fix problems in the back country.

Bike: 2017 CRF 450RX (purchased this spring)
Kit: 2019 YETI 129 Freeride

Picked up both snow check kits yesterday from Argyll. Ended up with serial #3 and #4. Just a few photos to start off. Only mods to the bike so far is cycra handguards and a trail tech pro GPS. More to come... cheers

These are going to be awesome.

Best mods I did, was thermostat, with gauge, and stiff front springs. ( .64 ), but I can spin a scale.

Already had a soft seat for dirt/ wood.

Lithium battery was worth the $200 as well.

Oh yah , and a Yeti ski, but you already have them !

Stop in at C3 powersports in st.albert. They usually have a full stable of bikes they are working on with all kinds of different combinations of mods and interesting custom gadgets on different customers bikes. You will likely get better info and ideas on the products out there chatting with Derek and drooling on their shop floor than you will at the entire sled show. By far the best dudes in the industry. They treat you right, products are great and prices are fair.

I was actually hoping they would be at the show. If not i will definitely drop in their place to have a look. Ive been planning this bike since before i snow checked and been scouring the internet for all the best ideas every day since. Lots of options, lots of $ to be spent. C3 will definitely be taking some of it for sure.

sent you a pm, but it really comes down to how much you want to spend. I have no clue about reliable on these bikes, its my first year, i hope its all up time but im pretty sure you need to maintain it at a higher level then a sled. Oil change every day or second day, torque yeti kit bolts every day, inspect all components every day, inspect breather tubes every day.

I think im going to do some oil sampling based on riding hours to see when i should do a change, 5 vs 10, vs 15. It would be nice to go the whole weekend without having to need to do it, but if over fueling and oil breakdown is happening sooner then i don't want to wait and will do it every day.

With the tranny and engine sharing oil and the abuse your clutch takes... the rentals change every day no matter what hours they put on. changing oil in the trailer gets old

As far as reliability of the Honda, I wouldn’t be to concerned. One guy I know whips his hard lots and races it a a very competitive level for the last 3 years with no issues.

Something that would be good to have at least in trailer is spare chain and joining links. Snowmobile shops don't carry it. You may not need it but nice to have in the group. Had a rental last spring blow just a joining link. Another guy ( Assaultin ) flew back down his trailer, grabbed one and we all had a hell of a day.

Here is a build list broken down into a few categories (needs to wants) For some of the products I have specified my preferred type/brand but there are many options out there. IMHO these are the best of the products available and you support local as well. Through in some ball park pricing as well. Some may say some of my needs may be unnecessary but these are my basics. You can definately also build some of these products on the cheap.

As far as oil changes go, it's all dependant on how well you can keep engine temps up and if you are running a factory ECU. After 2 days of riding I have pretty well zero fuel present and oil is pristine. I have seen others gain up to 500ml of fuel in the oil after 1 day. All depends on how well it is set up. I still change oil every 2 days of riding. Oil is cheap. Cheers.

Hi Guys

Sorry for the long wait for an update as we have been waiting for parts to arrive and i have a young family and that always take priority. So far both bikes have been stripped way down with front suspension shipped out and should be done by the end of the week. I have the yeti kit mated with the bike after some fitment issues that we resolved and some missing parts. Things should start to take shape real soon as the season is here.

as far as chains go it I always carry a spare in two pieces with clipped together, so they can be used for either chain (timbersled) you can buy a cheap chain for 25 $ at least to get you back to the truck. Put it in a mountain bike inner tube so it doesn't get anything greasy. As for as what chain to use everyday any GOOD quality x-ring or O-ring chain is will work just my $.02

Couple more photos of the progress

on both bikes , Installed the chain, set rear suspension, built yeti rack and installed unabiker rad guards. Also wrapped 80% of the panels on 1 bike, but didnt take any photos yet. the aeribis kit doesnt come with the airbox panel....wtf, so now thats on order.

C3 order should arrive today and im picking up front suspension this weekend.
