So we were out and about visiting our pony yesterday and came across a garage sale. They had a neat 5x9 cargo trailer they wanted to sell. It was hand made in BC by them and had a BC plate but no vin. Is the old registration enough to get AB registration without inspections and a vin?

get a set of dies and punch your own VIN into it...... or take the Bill of Sale to registries and see what they say.

I've had a couple utility trailers that I had registered as "home built"

i swear you can put office chair casters onto a 4x4 and put a hitch on that and call it a trailer in sask.

i doubt registries will allow it.... Used to be able to punch your own serial # onto a trailer up to a few years ago, but they have changed that since.... Good luck. And let us know...... It will need inspected and gone through, i'm sure......

Im not desperate enough to go through all that, I can just borrow my dads with enough time.
This was a similar situation to one a few years ago when looking at sled trailers to. In the end we bought brand new.

I called a couple years back about the same thing. A guy came from Calgary to red deer and punched a VIN into it. Cost me like 50-75$. He gave me some piece of paper that let me register it. Price has something to do with trailer weight from what I remember.

as of 2 years ago you could pick up forms at registry office and have a guy come punch a number in.... not sure about now.

Just did my 20 year old car trailer. Go to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) website and follow the rules and fill out the form. Was easy and faily painless. $100 and tax for single and $450 plus taxfor tandem. Go to Regestries with paper and done! Easy. In the future, there will be a time thta you WILL HAVE to have an assigned S/N on homebuilt trailers. Link below!

I've done this with two trailers in the last year, the guy barely looked at the trailer lol all he does is stamp the vin and give you a sheet to take to registries. Super simple and like was said above it's only a hundo for a single axle.
