I made the mistake of telling my wife that whatever she could draw I could build. That's what she came up with. It's 1/4" plate steel with 2" flat bar top and bottom to make it look like I beam. The fence is hung on the conc posts which is 2'x2' solid conc on a 10' deep pile.

How many hours do you have into the fabrication of the big gate?

Went pretty good really. Been a few years since I built it. But I think I did over 3 weekends. About 60 hrs or so.

For you woodworking guys....any tips for someone looking to get into it? We are building a house next year so have been tossing around the idea of building our cabinets over the winter. Ive done quite a bit of finish carpentry work but no cabinetry. Im guessing I would need a nicer tablesaw that I have.

Hobbies are expensive. I have three, wait, four. Probably why I don't have a significant other, house, nice truck or really anything else people would consider normal for a guy my age.

Like Ron, I too collect records (however my collection pales in comparison to his).

I've been into antique vehicles for over ten years, and have had a revolving door of old heaps in my stable. None get finished, some barely get worked on, but all have been enjoyed. I'm really into flathead fords nowadays. (figures the only running old vehicle I have is a '61 Apache - for sale )





Recently I got sucked back into competitive paintball. I played from 99-07 before quitting for some reason or another. Last year I started again because I was really missing the competition and fun. I lied and told myself it would only be the odd weekend. Well this year, along with 4 of the guys who I started playing tournaments with all those years ago, I was back in full-swing and so far so good.

Hunting and fishing or my biggest hobies along side of sledding and sxsing. I weld lots to I will build anything before I will buy it but I am a welder buy trade so its hard to call it a hobby when its my job to. but I really like building things and will put my skills up against anyone lol.

So after I got the backyard done I started to finish my basement. This thread could also be called "things I got done before having kids". Any way liked the design of the gate and incorporated it onto the ceiling.

A cheap table saw with an expensive blade and a track saw would be good. Router table if your going to make the doors. pocket hole jig. The hardest part is the finishing.
I started with hardly any tools and got by. Theres ways to do everything and still get quality results, it just takes longer.

Thanks. Go for it, I have done a lot of cabinet refacing/painting. It will be well worth it. Just make sure you use the proper coatings so it sticks to what you already have and doesn't peel off in a few months.
Hows your spray gun skills? It really speeds up the process and gives a much more professional look.

Muscle Cars are my hobby expensive one but fun

May be expensive but when your done you have something of some value, you may not profit or even get all your money back but at least you get something. So many hobbies take your money and then its gone with no return ever. Probably not supposed to look at hobbies from a financial point, but I cant help it.

Just bought a house so have a garage again. Going to finish off a project car that has been plaguing me for years then maybe start a resto on an old truck (60's Merc). Also getting back into sports, just started badminton and lacrosse starts next week. Would like to play rugby again as well.

I have always enjoyed designing and building, regardless out of wood or metal. Lately since I have been unemployed I have been building stereo systems for sxs and atv. I have also been a bit of an audiophile so I guess the two go together.

I wish i had the attention to detail to be able to do some of this stuff, but I seem to have pretty simple taste; if it builds boost, burns fuel, makes lots of noise, or has a great probability of at any time self destructing or severely injuring its operator then I'll probably like it. I've already got the road, snow, mud and water figured out, next is the air... that's where this hobby quadruples in expense.
