I need help. I am torn. I am thinking of getting the best guy in the world a Christmas present, but I'm a bit stuck.

Helmet Cam or hand held cam? And what kind is the best (without breaking the bank).

Any help is appreciated!

That is a dilemma! The helmet cams, IMHO, need a lot of creativity in the mounting. To me it is pretty boring watching someone go down a trail or follow a buddy with the same camera angle for 3-4 minutes. The experienced guys mount the cameras wherever (back of sled, side of sled, and many that I haven't figured out yet) and then doo some fancy editing (Dave Norona is a pro at making videos Motivational Speaker, Corporate Team Building, Life Coaching, Sport Coaching - Norona Life - Dave Norona or go to You-Tube and search "noronalife")

On the other hand with the hand held you need to park yourself and take video coming at you and going away from you. More dimensional!

I haven't used a helmet cam and I was thinking of getting one. I have a Kodak camera with video included. I am now going to get the same type only a little better unit this time (more pixels for clear pictures and more video features)

Good luck and Merry Xmas::xmas2004_15::xmas2004_15::xmas2004_15:

This is the one that I want to get this year. They are $350 online and come with a goggle mount and some other goodies.

So I should be looking at maybe a helmet cam that has some different mounting options so that it's not limited to being mounted on just the helmet.. any ideas on brands?

The GoPro hd has the best mounting hardware in my opinion

I use both the the helmet mount and a chest harness if you get the motorsport version it comes with a wide variety of mounts in the kit the chest harness was extra

The GoPro HD Motorsports helmet cam is an awesome camera and comes with a variety of mounting plates that can be put in different areas....helmet, hood...etc. Can't go wrong with this camera!

I have a handheld HD cam and I find more often I use my digital cam that I carry as well for still photos.

My handheld digital still cam does take HD video as well, so its somewhat versitile. The camcorder is good for those days you want to park and shoot vids.

Do you ever see your guy watching lots of youtube videos? Or how about sled videos (of course right?) Does he comment that a helmet cam would be awesome?

The contour and gopro's are awesome cams, but you play a little more for that awesomeness.

Without breaking the bank I would recommend the Drift X170

Drift Innovation X170 Action Sports Camera - PointofViewCameras.ca

Its a little bigger, can be used as a handheld cam with limited functions and has a LCD screen so you can see where its pointing or watch your vids as you take them so you know if you get those great shots.

You can get it in an HD version as well, and HD is all the hype right now of course, but most people never use the HD to its full potential. If he is a techy kinda guy who likes to have nice vids, the HD might be better for him.

My next cam purchase most likely will be the GoPro HD, or the VIO POV but those are both much more exspensive.

Get the Go Pro HD helmet cam. Takes awesome video and is fun to play around with. Here is some video from my Go Pro last year.

The GoPro and Drift cameras mentioned above are both very good. I personally prefer the Drift because I find it a lot easier to use, plus it has better battery life (especially with the long life battery installed). The interface on the GoPro can be frustrating at times and I've missed plenty of footage because I wasn't recording when I thought I was.

Depending on how generous Santa is going to be this year, you might also want to look at the which has just been announced. We're really excited about this one!

That's a tuff question to answer. I carry both when riding, and use both about the same amount. I guess it depends what you're trying to get for a finished product. A video put together with all helmet cam footage can drive some people crazy. But a video with none of it seems to be lacking these days. I guess if you can only have one it's probably cheaper to start with a helmet cam.....lots of good affordable choices out there now. I spent way more on my camcorder.....mostly to get very good image stabilization. Not so important in a helmet cam 'cuz your moving anyway.

Hmmmmmm, not sure that was helpfull! :p

You can always use a helmet cam as a handheld cam. Plus, I figure the inherent weatherproofing of a helmet cam is worth considering.

And I'd reckon the quality gains to be had in a handheld aren't going to be worthwhile for an amateur, so skill level is a consideration as well.

Yup, like I said. All depends on what you're looking for as a finished product.
