Helmets, a thing of the past?

I always wear a helmet and make sure my kids do too. When I was in the trauma ward at the U of Eh this past summer after my MC accident there was a girl on the same ward that was a passenger on a MC that was involved in an accident. From what I understand she was not wearing a helmet. When I was discharged she had still not woken up. There was another guy on the ward that had went out for a bicycle ride one evening. He fell of his bike and hit his head on the ground. He suffered a brain injury of some sort that resulted in him having violent tendencies to the staff and everyone around him. He was constantly trying to escape from the ward and the hospital. A brain injury is something that I wouldn't want anyone to have to go through. A helmet may not protect you from everything but it certainly helps.

My wife spent a month in critical care at U of A beginning of winter. From the quality of care she got there I’m not surprised buddy was trying to escape. That hospital is lacklustre at best. Probably would make me angry and violent too.

About 8 years ago 3 of us were riden at longisland lake and the road down to the pits was always fast and fun with lots of curves. That day we were at the bottom of the pits ready to leave and a kid and his gf were flying on a race quad. they past us at the pits and went flying up the road. About 5 mins later we left and 4 or 5 turns up that road and that quad was in pieces half in the trees half on the road. Girl on the back actually died...she was not wearing a lid. you roll up at a crash like that and you won't forget that vision ever. Yes different then sledding in 5 feet of fresh but topic made me think of that day.

I fail to understand the the thought process and logic behind people who choose not to wear a skid lid. Honestly though, how is this even questionable? Far as I'm concerned, there is never a "safe" time to be not wearing a helmet while riding anything motorized. 9/10 guys fly up and down the trail on the way to the alpine which makes a strapped down helmet 100% necessary, especially considering they/we do it to float over the whoops with intent of making the ride smoother. Tree riding is no safer, you may be going slower than on the trail, but you still have nothing but trees to collide with everywhere 10 fold increasing your chances of wrapping your head off one in the process.

Hopping on snowmobiles to ride without a helmet makes you a retard. Both now and after you take a good spill which is inevitable. We've all takin our turn coming off a sleigh or bailing for some reason or another. It just happens, pro or not.

so how many of you wear spine protection jacket while sledding? and why not? seeing as how safety conscious you claim to be? spinal injuries are real and it don't take much of an impact? hmm.
I wear a flack jacket and a helmet, and i don't need no law to tell me too!

Funny you mention that, I also ride sport bikes in the summer, and my Leather Joe rocket has a 1/2" foam spine board in it. It is removable as its hidden behind a breathable mesh with zipper on the bottom. I removed it and have it Velcro'd into my sledding Jacket. I'm a little excessive maybe, as I also wear a lower back brace over my thermals, and another setup up top to peel my outer shoulders back and maintain posture.

Im only 37, but e been pretty hard on my body over the years and it's already saying Phuck you on the daily. I now do what I can to help it out in an effort to make last the rest of my life.

That's unfortunate. It was top notch for me. I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else.

Some people like to ride street bikes with out a helmet too.
Doesn't really effect me though.

glad to hear, i can tell you with out a doubt, that as you age all the fun stuff you did in your younger years keeps track and comes and kicks you in the nuts as you get older. knees and hips are usually the first to let you know, fingers, elbows and shoulders follow, protect yourself now can mean a better life in the latter years. problem being the only way to learn is through experience.

i just don't need stupid laws to tell me to tie my shoes.

Just about every time I cross into Montana on my bike, my helmet comes off. Is it smart? Nope. Is it your concern? Also a nope. Not unless you are the poor bastard picking up my pieces if I crash. I am commenting on this after suffering a broken neck while snowmobiling, did the helmet save my life in that instance? Maybe. My point is, it is my prerogative to choose to ride without a helmet while in some states, just like the dudes in the hills. They don't want to wear them, why do you care? Live and let live.
