I have a full face helmet currently and it seems very clostrophobic. Each time I get stuck or help someone else, it is very hard to breathe and I have to take it off each time and then put it back on, etc. Several friends have the modular helmets, but I wanted to hear about the Motorcross style helmets. I haven't really ridden with anyone that has one, but they seem like they would be less constricting. Can anyone give me some pointers (and the "stop riding with people who get stuck comment" or "don't get stuck" won't help!)? Also, could you recommend some motor cross helmets that would be good (under $200)?

Thanks!:)

I bought my motocross helmet from General Auto in Lamont for under $200. (I think it was under, long time ago). And would never consider going back to a full faced. The motocross helmet is light and easy to breath, but can be a bit cold on those frosty mornings. I have a good balaclava and goggles and have no problems. Hope this helps!:):)

I did the change this year. From a full face mod to open face. And personally i have to say get ride of that overweight neck bending p.o.s......... I still in a real good stuck take it off, but it doesnt bother me to have it on. When you go to buy one buy everything at once, you want it all to fit together. Some helmets dont fit so well with goggles.

Been using MX helmets for about 15 years now, cant see myself going back to a fullface. Dont cheap out on a helmet that bucket protects the rest of your life.Buy what fits and is also comfortable, the lighter weight the better to help prevent neck damage. Also find goggles that will fit the helmet and your face, not all goggles fit all helmets. The goggles should fit snug to your face or you will end up with a fog problem. I have used Troy Lee ($$$) HJC has a good selection and reasonably priced, 509 Evolution. The best is to go to the local dealers and check them out.

Thanks for the replys guys. I guess I might be confused. I thought there were "special" snowmobiling moto cross "style" helmets??? I have a motor cross helmet that I use when I ride my dirt bike. Can I use this? I think it is an HJC and I would need to get new "snowmobiling" googles, is this correct? Thanks again!

Ya, and you might want to consider getting a breath deflector. deflects your breath downward away from you goggles and shield your face from the wind.

Hey man, don't get fooled into winter/summer open faced helmets. The summer ones you would wear dirt biking are just as good as the winter ones that they charge an arm and a leg for are.I wear my dirtbike one and it is awsome but you should have both an open faced and a closed face. The opens are great up to -15c or so, then your face gets cold no matter what you wear under it,thats when I start to wear my closed face.

Just got a new helmet from FLY racing and I LOOOOVE it--- very light, lots of wide open viewing (not claustrophobic) and a decent price (about $200.00). I think I ordered mine from UP NORTH SPORTS (could be wrong on the place) and it came in about $80 cheaper than anywhere in Canada.

Happy hunting!

Just rode today in -20 and my Modular Gmax Electric performed just as it was supposed to. I sweat awful and I had no fog whatsoever and when I stopped it was a quick lift of the front of the helmet and my face was totally open. I love it and will get the full benefit of the electric for sure.

I too just went from a moto style helmet to a mudular, and love it. Like everyone says it's warmer, you get less snow in the helmet, and i find it less closterphobic. Another big plus for me is that i can wear my glasses in it without real big fogging issues.

I wear a Z1R full face.....and will try my mx helmet when the weather is warm...

I kinda like to be able to control the airflow with the visor of a full face....run with it open slightly clears moisture really well.....or open it right up when your hot under the collar...

I have a low end open faced helemt from Cycle Jerks, I think it was $100, wear it dirt biking and sledding, have different goggles for each sport. I also picked up a Arctic Cat "No Fog" balaclava from Echo Cycle to keep the face warm and to deflect moisture down. The balaclava is awesome, even bought one for a friend so he could see how great it was.

I ride with a motocross helmet year round one for sledding and one for quadding, and ive had no issues with being cold in the -40's with it, just get a good pair of goggles that have a large footprint and covers most of the hole, and i make sure there is a little overlap to my bellaclave and its all good. I also think 200+ for a helmet is a little ridiculous. Mine was 85 bucks at the sled show and it goes through all the same testing and conforms to all the same safty standards as the next 500 dollar one. I agree you cant put a price on your life but all your paying for is a brand name there people. And technically, your supposed to get a new helmet after a SINGLE crash. Just my 2 cents
