went to Whitecourt this morning, took off from Sons acreage south of town and rode north across Mcleod River down to the boat launch where we crossed the Athabasca to the Carson lake trail system..toured around the trails, stopped at the Trailblazers cabin for a coffee.signed the book and away we went, I found the old original Log haul road that was used from the 20s with teams of Horses pulling sleighs to Trucks pulling sleighs , finally stopped using it in early 70s .My father used to go to the logging camps on this road repairing sawmill eqiupment.and jason Gundersons father and grand father use to travel these old roads too.so was interesting ride today.
they used to use single axle trucks that would haul 4 lifts on the truck ,while pulling 2 sleighs with about 8 more lifts. a water truck from Millar western would keep the sleigh tracks iced up for easier pulling.and if you were on it with a car or pickup, be prepared to be blown off the road by these trucks that would or could not stop.
cant find any old pics of the trucks pulling these sleighs..
